I can't say that the smaller size of tungsten gets me more bites. But I can sure feel the bottom much better which typically leads to more fish.

I think tungsten is superior to lead with dropshotting being the exception.

Not sure I catch any more than I did with lead but I definitely like the smaller size/weight ratio of tungsten.

I won't climb trees and jump in the water with lead. I prefer tungsten for feel.

I have always use lead jigs and weights and have been looking at using tungsten but am curious if it is worth the price have you guys seen any increase in strikes using tungsten over lead Like Chris said, it probably won't help you get more bites but you can certainly feel the bottom structure better with it and the smaller size helps you get the hook in the fish better most of the time. When a bass takes a soft plastic bait, typically the weight goes into the fish's mouth as well. When you set the hook, the weight normally is pulled out of their mouth thereby forcing their jaws to open to allow the weight to pop out. If you are on them really good, you will see the scratch marks from their teeth on the weight. Common sense says the smaller opening of their mouth the better your chances are for a good hook up ratio. Hope that makes sense.

I think tungsten is a little more noisy. Maybe only helps on lakes with rock. Also smaller diameter doesnt seem to get snagged near as often.

Never tried tungsten but I'm sure I will one of these day. Reason being is about 20 years ago when I lived in Kansas a local Alco's was going out of business. They had brass weights on sale for .25 cents a bag. I bought every one they had and still haven't run out. I am getting pretty low on 1/8 and 3/16's thought. Might actually run out in another year or two.

I bought an entire shopping cart full of them when Walmart remodeled and had all of them in a buggy for 25 cents each. Also had Power pro for 25 cents a spool. I wish I could find tungsten on sale like that. Those things are expensive. I use tungsten for flipping and c rig. Other stuff like jigs, jig heads, drop shot, etc gets lead.

Got lucky about 5 years ago, Walmart was clearing out all strike king tungsten and they had then piled in box on the shelf. Offered them $25 for the whole box haha. Still using them today...

When K-Mart was closing their doors in Amarillo I bought every bag of Zipper worms and Terminator spinnerbait they had for fifty cents each. Try Ten Bear baits for some good prices on tungsten.

100% of the fish I have caught on worms, jigs and spinner baits has been with lead weights. I have had no issues using lead.

Just being able to feel the bottom better is worth it to me.

I personally don't think it makes any difference at all. If you know how to fish you can feel a fish with either one.

I personally don't think it makes any difference at all. If you know how to fish you can feel a fish with either one. I used to feel the same way. Probably true if you are flipping timber. I went from using lead and mono to tungsten and fluoro, and it makes a difference. When you are fishing a lake that is 99% rock and you are looking for isolated stumps, I find it is much easier to distinguish the 2 with tungsten. Maybe it doesnt help you feel the fish better, but IMO it helps me find irregularities in the bottom so I can make repeat casts to those areas.

I personally don't think it makes any difference at all. If you know how to fish you can feel a fish with either one. There's more to it than just feeling bites, as several others have already mentioned, but you're correct. Give a skilled angler basic gear, they're still going to catch them. Give a skilled angler top-end gear, they will probably catch more. Tungsten shines when dragging on long-line and punching dense cover with heavy weights, in my opinion. The smaller diameter makes a big difference punching, both in getting through the cover and increasing hook-up ratios by not opening the fish's mouth as much when the weight passes back through on the hookset.

As everyone has said in this thread it lets you feel the structure, rocks, wood, grass etc, so you can fish better.. ie pausing on twigs that with lead you would have not felt.

I switched to tungsten several years ago and wouldn't even consider switching back. Definitely worth the extra cost. Would like to find some heavy tungsten jigs that were affordable just can't afford 8 to 10. Dollars per jig.

If you can afford to fish with Tungsten, well then, that is your best option. No doubt on the feel.

To me the advantage lies in what Outdoordude said, tungsten slips through smaller holes and creates smaller holes. Plus with the smaller profile there is less surface to create drag which allows you to feel the bait better and speeds up the fall which at times is good. But I'm cheap so the only tungsten I use is worm/flipping weights.

I have really been using the tungsten weights on some of my rigs and have been using 1/16 and 1/8 ounce weights. Been using them with Senko, Fluke and Trick worm baits. Sometimes pegged right to the head of the baits and sometimes pegged a little bit up from the bait. I really have liked the way those techniques work with the smaller size weights especially on the Senko bait most recently. Don't know why but for me the baits just seem to work a little better and I have a better feel on these finesse type rigs with the tungsten.
