I have not had a boat in over 9 years.
Just bought a boat two weeks ago (2005 Tracker Crappie Pro 175 w/50 hp Merc)...and have been trying to research electronics...AND I AM LOST.
This is probably what someone being released from prison for the past 30 years and being handed a cell phone feels like.
After my research I have no idea what to buy...all I want is something that shows me brush piles (for crappie fishing) and a map of where I am.
Then what the heck is Navistar? Side scan? 360? GPS?
Just tell me what to buy...a cheap, medium, and expensive brand/model to choose from.
Thanks in advance.

Just go to BPS or somewhere that carries Garmin, Lowrance, Humminbird and play with the units to see which one with the features you want is easy to use and within your price range. Most of the electronics guys in there are fairly knowledgeable to my surprise.

Good advice. I'd plan on making more than one trip because what they can do and the keystrokes necessary to get them to do it can be overwhelming.
I haven's seen one but Lowrance advertises the Hook as the easiest to operate.
My unsolicited advice would be to get the largest screen that is within you budget. Bigger is easier on the eyes.

Walk before you run as it can be overwhelming. It really depends on your budget and minimum expectations. I'm sure you're discovered that you can spend relatively little to relatively a lot - especially if purchasing new. Consider starting with something simple like a used LCX 17-MT (its monochrome - not color); compatible transducer; and GPS puck antennae. As you become more familiar with the technology and its application to your fishing matures, you can upgrade...

Very admirable of you sir. Thank you We compete in customer service, not in being the cheapest. Our customers are more than just a number or a sale. Assisting the consumer is what we do even if they choose another source for the product.

For what you want it to do, a Lowrance Hook2 (in whatever size you choose) comes in a model called Tripleshot and is very affordable. The side imaging comes in very handy when searching for brush piles. As for ease of use, the Garmin Echomap Plus series with its touch screen is hard to beat, but also more expensive.
