What is your budget?
Get the most expensive Lowrance of Humminbird unit that you can afford. Personally, I prefer Lowrance. You dont necessarily want to buy a newbie unit because once you become comfortable with interpreting your finder youll likely want a more advanced unit so you might as well get the best unit youre comfortable spending money on and getting acustomed to its image. IMO.
If you can't find em wind em.

Don't listen to them, get a Humminbird Helix Mega and be done with it. Never have to upgrade. Pay David at Shut Up and Fish $75.00 to set it up for you and go catch some fish.
I am a Senager. (Senior teenager) I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 50 years later. I get an allowance every month. I have PU truck and a bass boat, I am blessed. Conscience never acquits, it either accuses or excuses.

Its not rocket science, and if you enjoy fishing, you will learn whatever technology your purchase quickly Set a budget
If you can; wait until November when they start clearing out previous generations The clearance prices usually last until February Get the best deal you can find I have Lowrance and Humminbird. Both, great units and both easy to learn
Last November, the best deals were on the Gen 1 Humminbird Helix models
Dont know how you like to fish, but for a first fish finder, Id get something with 2D, Down imaging/down scan, charts, gps, and the ability to log/record sonar.

I'd suggest the Helix stuff. While I don't like em, they are really easy to use.
