Fishy B. the rougher the surf the closer they will come in if the bait is there. Those sharks can be in the 1st gut if it's rough, and even still when it's calm if there is bait. Don't be afraid to put one of your lines in the 1st gut and another in the 2nd. Then if you can get out further, do it with the rest of your lines.

Spazm09. If you're looking to buy good rigs I suggest checking out catchsharks.com. It'll be more expensive than making your own but the quality of there stuff is amazing.

The good news is that the hurricane hit to the east side of Galveston, so Galveston is on the clean side of the storm.
Forecast next week looks like a lot more days of scattered rain but, it's trace rain with winds maxing at 10. Now take a 10 day forecast with a grain of salt, especially on the coast, lol.

Yeah I'm cheap... I just use my surfboard to paddle baits out past the outside bar. Works every time!

I would be slightly concerned about your 30' leader... Ive never actually had this problem but 50# braid runs the risk of snapping due to abrasion if your shark runs and it gets dragged across the sandbar. Maybe im overly cautious, just a thought. Otherwise yiu have a fantastic setup man, good luck!

If you're planning to release the sharks you might want to crush the barbs down on the hooks. Makes for a much easier release.

Looks to me you are on the right track. It is quite possible to catch sharks on casted baits. They are perhaps a bit larger and more numerous further out, but they are there close to the beach quite often. If you can get a bait in between the 2nd or 3rd bar by casting (or swimming) (I am told I am crazy for doing that) then you are in the hunt. If I were you I would stop at a bait shop on the way in and see if they have any stingray. One plate sized ray could be cut into several castable baits and will last a lot longer on a hook. We have caught sharks on rays that have been out soaking 10-12 hours without being disturbed. It is a lot nicer than having to constantly be replacing the bait that keeps getting stolen. If you are looking to possibly catch reds as well the ray probably would not be a good bait. Small whiting caught in the surf might be a good all around bait, or mullet as well.

I was surf fishing in knee deep water when I was bout 19 catching whiting. I had a stringer of them tied to my belt loop. One quick pull I was on my arse and a blacktip swimming away with my stringer. Never again will I be in the water with my bait unless I am in a kayak, raft, etc. That evening I caught a 6 1/2 foot hammerhead between the 2nd and 3rd sandbar using cut stingray.

That is an issue. I don't swim baits out usually, just when you gotta do it (Sharkathon). I don't have them in the water with me. They either go into a small cooler for the trip or I do the backstroke and hold them out of the water above me the best I can. Even then there is a little psyching up process that has to take place prior to deployment.
