Hoping to buy our first house in the next couple years. Starting to save for the down payment. Just out of curiosity...

How much did you put down on your first house ($$$ not %) and how did you acquire that amount? Did you just save it all up? How long did that take? Did you borrow or receive a gift from a family member? Wedding present? 401k loan? Inheritance?

401k loan

As I recall I saved $15K and borrowed something like 5K from my 401k. (The later is not a wisest option). Once you get the first house under your belt you build equity and then as long as you are buying and selling at the right time you'll always have that to roll into the next house. I'm on my third house in 8 years.

I'd buy this one.

My wife and I lived frugally and socked money away for a few years. Just bought our first house in June!

Saved our butts off for a year and a half and borrowed some from family so we could get to the 20% down and didn�t have to pay PMI.

Paid family back over another year and a half. We were very fortunate.

3K down on the first one. 12.5K on the second on. The 12.5K was profit from the first one.

Congrats on that!!! We are getting excited about the idea.

My mom and step-dad are gonna let us move in with them when our apt lease is up for cheap rent. Our rent/utilities will be cut in half which is gonna help tremendously with saving this down payment. Its a win-win cause they want the added income cause they're saving for a retirement home on a beach somewhere.
