I had to have a long conversation with a friend about this. He got reported to HR because of a side hug he gave to a coworker that was reported to be unwanted.
My stance: No touching of any sort, outside of a handshake, is appropriate at work in this day in age. Discuss.

Yes. Dont even look at anything that might look ok to someone. Dont touch. Dont hug.
Pelvic thrusts are ok if you dont make contact.

Touching is definitely off limits. As for compliments, my go to line is "if you wouldn't pay the same compliment to a man don't say it to a woman ".

How is one to know it's "unwanted" if the offended person does not communicate their wishes? When I worked at American Eagle, I'd often hug some of my coworkers (and they'd hug back). Sometimes a new person would be there, and the first words out of his or her mouth on seeing this was "oh, I'm not a hugger". Great, no worries.
But yes, I was in HR once because I patted a gate agent ON HER SHOULDER when I walked up behind her. Not on her heinie, nor her waist, or anywhere else inappropriate. She didn't say a word to me and just went directly to HR. The HR manager looked at the report and asked me if it was correct, and I said "yes". That was the end of it, and I never went closer than five feet to that coworker again (call me neurotic). But how was I to know without SOME indication from her?
Human beings are social animals, and touch is an essential part of being that social animal. Deprive a human being of contact with others long enough, and you get pretty warped results.

I have worked in an office with mostly women for 7 years and not once did I hug anyone. Nope. Rarely have I touch anyone that I can think of. Do you around huggin the guys at work and putting your hands on them? No? well then don't touch the women.

As for compliments, my go to line is "if you wouldn't pay the same compliment to a man don't say it to a woman ". "You must've been working out - you're chest is looking buff!"????? I typically do not touch/hug until their last day - and then I'll give them a big thank you hug. It is sad that you can't treat your work family like your home family (for those of us where it is that way).

I know it's wrong. But I fake a family death about once a month so my hot secretary will hug me. The condolence hug is approved by HR and it's always a good hug.

I've had a couple of older ladies give me a side hug. I freeze up like a board.

I miss the last Estimator apprentice we had here, she would rub her boob on my elbow when standing behind me looking at a computer screen together. I thought about turning her in but then came to my senses.

Do you around huggin the guys at work and putting your hands on them? Hug other guys at work - Yes I do. Putting my hands on them - absolutely not. Neither guys or girls.
