Having to replace my meter box thanks to a fallen tree taking out my lines. Anyway I had a guy tell me if I replaced meter box in my old 1955 house I have to replace my breaker box as well and relocate it outside. Another guy told me no I didn't have to do that but did need a disconnect by the meter. Any of this hold water or are they trying to scam me?

My current house has a breaker box right next to the meter box outside. Three were several breakers that I couldn't find in the 3 breaker panels in the house. Had a electrician out for a project one day and he popped off the cover, and sure enough, there were the other Circuit breakers. They were for the larger outdoor items like the Hot Tub, Septic Tank, compressor for the HVAC, etc.

The second guy sounds more correct, need just a disconnect (that is how our house in San Antonio was), but I haven't looked at the code for a few years.

In the process of getting power out to the new barn, HAD to have new meter & total disconnect box installed on the pole first. For first responder (primarily fire) safety.

Hope there's a misunderstanding about the breaker box. That belongs indoors where it's protected.
Maybe there's an ordnance or building code requiring an outside outlet box with and appropriate outdoors breakers? Up in DammYankeeLand where I originated most places now have code requirements for X number of outside outlets, water faucets, etc, all kinds of stupid stuff to jack up the cost of building.

Fishing, a man knows a serenity of soul and peace of mind that he finds in doing nothing else, and it makes no difference whether or not he catches anything. The mind of a true fisherman is not on petty subjects.

If you're in town, call the city inspector's office and ask what they'll pass. See if you can get it in writing though.

Yeah, they were in a weatherproof panel box that had rubber washer-ed screws holding the cover on. There were 8 breakers in there, all 30 and 40 amp or bigger.

I have two panels. Both are mounted to the outside of my house next to the meter. I dont know if you have to move it outside or not. I think one reason they like them being outside now is so if there is a fire in the house the fire department doesnt have to search every closet inside to turn off the power. If you do have to move it outside the electrician will put the new panel in a NEMA rated enclosure, which is weatherproof. The only thing that will not be good for you is the price to move it.

You dont have to move your interior panel. The outside boxes are for outside loads. Youll probably have to buy your new meter box.

All I said was mine are outside. Im not saying thats the right way or wrong way to do it.
