What is a good, preferably cheaper, rod & reel combo for crappie? Just getting in to crappie fishing and I need to get me a few set-ups. Thanks!

The Pflueger Trion combo is a good combo for about $60.00.

I agree with Academy. I don't spend more than about $30 on any of my crappie gear but I'm no pro. I like using the ultralight setups which I know a lot of people will probably cringe at the thought of but in the boat I have had no issues with them and enjoy the way it feels getting a 2# crappie on a setup that small. From the bank would be a little different I'm sure. I do have a couple of the old school crappie poles that seem to be around 6000' long with small zebco reels on them for bank fishing creeks but haven't used them in years.

I use the Shakespeare Microlite rods for crappie. 7 ft rod at Wal-Mart I believe is 16.99. Pair that with one of the small bass pro reels and you have a decent crappie rig.

When in doubt, set the hook.

A lot depends on the type of fishing your doing. But one thing Ill guarantee you is you dont need a $100.00 plus rig. Hell the pros dont either but they feel better using them.
One thing that I see most is folks use spinning reels and spinning type rods mostly. They are fine for a lot of fishing situations but definitely not the best for all.
I really like deep water jigging and my preference is a shorter rod 7 1/2 to 8 with a left handed bait casting reel.By the way Im right handed. I can pull line off the reel and know how deep Im at. Way easier than trying to use a spinning reel. Years back Cabelas put a sale on Diaws reels that had flipping switches. I bought 6 of them at $30.00 each. For crappie fishing they will last several lifetimes.Im using them on 7 1/2 rods. I do have some spinning outfits but very seldom use them except for one. It is a old Cortland Black Diamond 9 8-9 weight fly rod that I have a small Shimano spinning real on. I have used it for years and if I can ever say I love anything that does not have blood running in its veins this is it. If I could find ore I would buy them.
Having said all that you need to know that I also own two G Lumis rods that I never use. So if you decide you want top of the line light and ultralight rods give me a shout.
Just remember that high price catches more fisherman than fish.
