I’m trying to get started with live bait for stripers. What kind of set up do y’all use? Thanks in advance

7’ ML-M rod, I prefer something with a glass blank instead of graphite for live bait.
17-20 backing with 12-15# big game leader. Flourocarbon leader if Im fishing in clear water.
Fishing in the tree’s and need to winch them out Ill change out leaders to 20lb and crank my drag down.

Abu 6500. 1 3/4 pencil weight with swivel on the bottom. 2/0-3/0 EC kayle hook.

I use 30 pound mono leaders. I tried fluorocarbon but they are less abrasion resistant than mono despite popular belief. I would not recommend less than 20 pound leaders. I also switched over to 2/0 octopus j hooks and have been much happier than when I used circle hooks.

I use my crappie rods in open water with 12 lb test line and a 10 lb test fluorocarbon leader. I tie the leader to a big barrel swivel and put a big egg weight (3/4 oz) above that. The pro angler crappie rods will just wear them out if you are in a spot where they can run free.

In tight spots like when I'm fishing near docks I switch to my 7 foot ugly sticks and 20 LB fluorocarbon leaders. Since I am using a spinning reel, the number one thing for me is to set the drag extremely loose so the fish can run with the bait and have it deep before I tighten the drag and hook him. In these tight spots I crank the drag very tight and drag them out of the cables and will ease off on the drag once they run for open water. If you will let them, stripers will wear them selves out on your drag and just roll over in your net.

John 21:3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee.
