Have gen 3 unit and don’t know the difference or if there really even is one

Totalscan does sidescan, downscan and 2d sonar

The Lss2 does only side and down scan. It requires a separate 2d transducer (usually installed inside the hull)

Yeah Id say so. Only real upgrade over either is the 3d transducer.

I had the same question a few months ago, and wondered why would someone use one over the other.

It seems most people use the lss-2 + a 2D sonar mounted inside the boat hull, so you can have readings at full speed while mounting the lss-2 out of the water while on plane so that you don't have a 12" piece of drag spitting up a rooster tail.

That's what I read, but went with the totalscan and suffer the drag.
