How do GWs check cast nets for size? What do they measure?

From TPWD website:

Cast Net:
A net that can be hand-thrown over an area.
May be used to take NONGAME fish and shrimp only.
May not be greater than 14 feet in diameter.
In SALT WATER, nongame fish may be taken for bait purposes only.

Do they spread out your net and measure the diameter? It has be mentioned that a 7 foot net might not open up to a 14 foot diameter rather more like a 12 foot diameter. So would an 8 ft net that normally only opens up to 14 ft be a legal cast net in Texas? The rules don't state radius of the net only diameter. smile

If it does not exceed 14 ft in DIAMETER it is legal. If the GW measures the radius and it is too long (7ft +), ask him/her to measure the diameter if you think it does not exceed 14 ft.

I have been checked.. they pick it up by the horn and stretch it to check the radius. If the radius doesn't exceed 7', then it is good. They don't really check if it is 7' and 3" or anything, they do have better things to do with their time, like asking you how well you did on the water.

Hint::: They are a great source for fishing Hot spots.
