So, a bearing on the boat trailer went out and completely disintegrated. Cut some grooves into the spindle. I take the best fix is to get a whole new axle.

The marine shop said it would be about 3 weeks. I'm wondering how hard is it to change the axle yourself?

From the research I've done it looks like I can order an axle in all new hardware for a couple hundred bucks. I've watched about a dozen YouTube videos of how to change out springs or the whole axle and it looks doable. Any advice for a DIYer?

It's a 2012 bear trailer for a 20 ft pontoon.

Easy peasy with jack stands and floor jack. Pontoon trailers wit their small tires require extra dilgence when it comes to bearings. Might consider oil bath if you can find. Also recruit a buddy.

If you are even slightly mechanically inclined you can do this. take pictures with your phone for reference. leave the trailer connected to your vehicle. jack up one side of the trailer high enough to completely suspend the trailer tire and put a jack stand to support. do the same to the other side. If the springs are wore replace them as well. The axles can be bought at northern tool as swell as all the other parts. know the weight of the boat all all. go buy the axle and hubs they are usually sold separately and get some marine grease. there are usually four bolts that connect the axle to the springs. spray and let stand with penetrating oil. remove the nuts. replace with the new axle. tighten back the spring bolts. these new hubs that you can buy are real easy. make sure the axle ends are clean. using the marine bearing grease coat the axle where the hub goes. remove the hub from the plastic container. carefully just push the hub over that axle. once you believe it is on push harder to make sure the bearing is seated. install the new axle bolt. if you have never tightened an axle bolt watch a video on you tube. tighten it snug but make sure the spindle spins smoothly. too tight and it wont too loose and is is sloppy. do the same to the other side. put the trailer tires on. grease the hubs usually located behind the hub. make sure the grease moves through the hub. make sure and take the boat around the block stop and place your hand on the hub it should not be hot to touch. until you are use to tightning hubs i suggest jack up each tire one at a time leave the tire on and see if you can move the tire up and down. there should be no movement. there are many videos on you tube that you can use on a lap top. let me know how it goes.

Good stuff from Matadu. I would not even think twice about replacing springs for the money just do it. Make sure you get the correct weight carrying capacity. Don't just go by number of leafs. Did that once and they flattened out in a matter of weeks.

***UPDATE****

Thanks for all the replies guys. I ended up ordering the same replacement axle from Rockwell American. The whole axle kit w/ hubs and springs cam out to $430. Originally they had said $350 shipped. Had to wait 2 weeks. Next time I'll definitely order from sturdy built online..

Swapping it out was easy. About an hour by myself. Lesson learned to keep better track of the bearings.
