I don't have much experience fishing for hybrids. The closest lakes for me with hybrids is a 2 hour drive, so I don't get a lot of chances to fish for them. I got to make a trip earlier this week and found lots of fish schooled up and feeding on top. I used my trolling motor and not my big motor to get within casting distance so I wouldn't scare them. The feeding wouldn't last long, maybe 20 or 30 seconds and they were gone. There were small groups feeding all over the place. I couldn't get them to eat hardly anything. I caught a couple on topwater lures and a couple on slabs. One slabbing up and down and one swimming it through a feeding frenzy. Zero bites on swimbaits of various sizes and colors. Any suggestions on what I could have done different? Or was it because they weren't in a big school but in lots of little groups. It looked like they were feeding on small shad and sometimes it was some real small fry of some kind. Looked like minnows but only about 3/4" long. I tried downsizing my baits but I didn't have anything that small that I could cast far enough to get close to them.

When it's small bait I've had decent results with Cast Masters. What lake were you fishing?
If they won't bite a 4" chartreuse and white swim bait then I'd be lost....

Rig a pink or chartreuse clouser (fly) with a two foot tag line attached to one ounce egg sinker and swivel. A Carolina rig with a clouser replacing a plastic worm, small sassy,small road runner etc. Cast and retreive. Half ounce works also.

Fish will focus like a laser into one size of bait when they are in a frenzy like that. So if you are using the wrong size bait it is definitely possible that you will not get a bite, even with a bunch of hungry fish around.

I have had success with a white fly attached to a Large weighted casting cork. . The one I used was called " the launcher,". I don't know if they are still available. You can throw it a mile.
If they are locked in on small bait , this is the ticket.
Sometimes there are active fish that will take a large bait about 10 ft under the surface activity.
Slow rolling a swim bait after a 10 second count down will get bit.

This time of year, small schoolie white bass are often terrorizing shad. The schoolies may be 5-8 inches in length. There are often larger white bass mixed in, but few are legal. This topwater action lasts seconds and then they submerge and run 100 yards or more. They surface feed and are gone again in seconds. This can last hours. These fish are impossible to stay with and really not much of a reason to. The shad schools recently hatched on many lakes and they are millions but only an inch or so long. It is almost impossible to get one of these fish to take a lure, when the water is full of live bait. I would recommend looking for larger schools with well defined arches that are near the bottom, but in areas where the bottom is above the thermocline.
