I am wanting to start fishing some on Tawakoni but its a 2 hour drive and I would like to know what wind speed and directions to avoid. I will mainly be drifting for big cats. I'm not looking for any holes or areas to fish I like finding them on my own just hate to drive that far to get in a bind with the wind. I run a 20' center console with 24" sides and it handles ruff water pretty well. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I only fish for fun and don't keep anything.

I figured 20mph would be out of the question but can you fish 12-15mph winds. Thanks for the reply

seen a pro-cat sink years ago before they built the new bridge...Wind was 30 he turned went under the bridge to the open and met some 5fters....he lost everything...
If it ain't broke don't fix it...but go ahead and work on it anyway.....

It can be tough figuring the compromises when picking a hull. Do you want one for you want to be out, or one that will get you home when you shouldn't be out? 'Course some driving sense matters too.

I think we have only been on Tawakoni one time in 8 years with sustained wind from the NW around 30mph and gusting well over 30, that was in a 20ft Lund Deep V, was definitely a super rough day and spent all day down near the dam. Biggest waves I have ever seen or been on. Everywhere we went it was a super slow go with the bow high and just plowing through big ugly waves. I was pretty puckered up early in the day but got more comfortable as the day went along. Just happened to be the first day that new Lund had ever been on Twok. I'm glad it wasn't mine and I was not driving. We have been on Twok many times at 20+ sustained and gusting upper 20's, that's more than plenty rough and makes for a long tough day of it. Lots of days around 20mph were fished from a 21ft Stratos CC Bay boat.
If I had any advice it would be to launch somewhere that is protected from the wind and just take it easy, work out into rougher water where you can quickly get back into sheltered water, just see how the boat handles it. Figure out where the flooded standing timber is, kind of hard to see when the lake it full and the waves are big, there is a lot of it, steer clear of it. If you are completely new to Twok, I consider it a fairly dangerous lake, take a guide trip with one of the guys here on TFF that really know the hazards, they will get you schooled up so you can bring your family back safely for years to come. Good luck, be safe.

Lund is my favorite rough water boat. Ran it on Superior and Michigan (among other lakes) from March through November--only 16 1/2 feet long. I was a lot angrier with the fish, back then. Like Box Fish mentions, skill and practice matters. With so much fine weather, it's easy to take for granted the seamanship that hasn't yet been learned--then you get caught spearing a large green one with the bow.
