Help me better understand it. I know that if the thermocline is at 35 feet then oxygen in the water below 35 feet is extremely poor. Say your in 80 feet of water is the water basically dead from 35 feet down or is there just a bad layer just below 35 feet and at 50 feet down is better cooler water with oxygen.

If there is a thermocline present, the oxygen below the thermocline is poor, less light present and colder temperatures. Because the bottom layer has less activity the bait are going to stay above it to feed on small organisms and plankton, thus bigger fish feeding on bait fish will stay above in comfortable oxygen levels and temps to feed on bait.

A thermocline sets up when warmer water on top no longer circulates with cooler water underneath. Let's say the thermocline is at 30 feet. The warmer water 0 to 30 holds oxygen, but is warmer than fish prefer. The cooler water is oxygen poor, but have a more pleasant temp that fish like. Some fish are tolerant of the cooler layer and may travel in it, while most stage near the 30 foot depth. The cooler water 30 to the Bottom becomes a layer less traveled for the fish. The thermocline becomes of bit of a stopping point. Look for fish staged in open water at the thermocline or above. If chasing whites or hybrids, look for areas where the lake bottom plateaus just above the thermocline where the fish can chase bait and press them against the bottom and feed.

Thermal squeeze is the term TPW uses. Stripers like the cold water but need the 02.
Bait is shallow but cold water stripers prefer is deep.

Some stripers will leave the comfort of the thermocline area and feed everyday.
Some won’t.
We catch fish in late summer that are long and skinny. Those are fish suffering from thermal stress.
