I love my Lews reels. Even their reels on the low end of the price spectrum have performed well for my kids. The other thing about Lews is they have great customer service. The other day I was cleaning a reel and lost a part. Called Lews the next day to order it. Their rep pulls up the part number very quick, then ships it to me for free! No charge for shipping. No charge for the part. I was floored. I'm a big believer in good customer service. It's a rare thing these days so I try to support the companies that try hard to serve their customers.

A couple of days ago I bought a new 7.3:1 Tatula on eBay for $81.00 with free shipping. This was the regular sized one, not the compact model. I have been a Shimano guy since the early 90s, but I am now transitioning to Daiwa Tatulas, and this makes five now. For $81, theyre hard to beat.

Sorry, I know this topic comes up often. With there being so many new reels out and good sales on older reels it is hard to choose. I am not looking for the best reel out there because we all know those are going to be the most expensive. I have been trying to find the best quality I can Staying under $200 msrp. I have all the old lews reels in that price range along with a few abu's. I just purchased the tatula ct that someone else posted the sale about, haven't used it yet but seems to be good quality for under $100! So, what reel would you guys buy right now for the best value but under $200? Just got a Revo x cranking reel very good reel probably need a couple more. J D

If you are buying new, I would go with the Curado K. I have one. Haven't used it a lot, but seems to be a good reel.
If you don't mind used, you can find the Curado E and Chronarch E series reels for $140-$150 or you could get two Citica E's for about the same price. All of which are outstanding reels and make up the majority of my arsenal. As others have stated, stay away from the Shimano "i" series...they are junk.

If you don't own a Revo SX...get one. They hover in the $149 range, but can be found as low as $99. It's a great mid-range reel at a low end price.
I was just gifted a Lews Speed Spool....not terribly pricey either...so far (3 trips) I really like it. Good luck!

I have also been switching over from Shimano to Lews and Daiwa. Shimano B, D, and E were awesome reels then they came out with the G series and it was so bad that Lews took over a lot of the market share from Shimano at the time, then Shimano comes out with the I series and they were better than the G but still not good. Because of that I will have to wait a while longer before I even think about getting a Shimano K reel. I want to give it more time to see how well it holds up. I bought a bunch of the I's because of the great (early) reviews of that reel and I got burned on that one in the end. I got rid of all of them. I haven't had a problem with any of my Lews reels or my Daiwa reels. Shimano needs to step up to the quality they used to make.

I think I'd take a serious look at the new entry level Shimano with DC...digital cast control. Supposed to retail for around $250.
