Is there any reason not to use 2x4s? Most lathing you see is 1x4s, but why not use 2x4s for the added strength?

Is there any reason not to use 2x4s? Most lathing you see is 1x4s, but why not use 2x4s for the added strength? it should be ok your fasteners have to penetrate at least 1/4" so they don't back out
