I'm going to be doing some Laguna Madre speck fishing under dock lights this summer in south padre island. I'm going to hire a guide to take me out as well, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience fishing just right off the dock under lights. I will try live bait under a popping cork of course, but what about throwing a jig(s)? Can I just use 2.5"-3" feather tail crappie jigs. Seems like a lot of the speck rigs I see on line are pretty much just that. Or do the swim bait style or imitation shrimp work better?

Crystal minnow or white sand eel Jr will be better.

What I'm telling you here won't likely catch many of size but in the lights you'll get regular double hook ups and catch a ton of fish, which can be fun sometimes. I use the double or speck rig set up but I'll tie on 1/8 oz crappie jigs with pink heads and use the white/glow bodies. Throw it past the light and let it sink a little then twitch it back through the lights. You'll occasionally catch some keepers but for sure you will catch a lot of numbers. On fishing piers I can catch constantly when others around me using larger jigs or live bait aren't getting a bite. Again, maybe only 1 out of 20 are keepers but it sure is fun. Take plenty of jig heads and bodies because they tear them up pretty easy. Good luck and have fun!

I'm going to go with a guide and hopefully fill a box with some for a meal, but I'd like to just be able to do some catching at night.
