Well they had the official ground breaking on the 16,000 acre lake in Fannin County. Should start impounding water in 2 years. It was neat to tour the site today and see how it lays in there and how big the area cleared versus what will be left standing. Should be a good lake in a few years. Plus they are adding fish attractive areas as they build the lake and subsequent bridge across it.

I know it has been a long time coming and will help the water supply for the NE Dallas area. It still saddens me to hear about the 200 families that will loose there homes. Some of which are old family farms established in the 1800's. I am sure most have been compensated very well to give up their heritage to a $1.2 billion project.

Hope they don't stock it with any sand bass or stripers and I hope they leave all the timber.

From what I read they removed about 50% of the timber. What they are doing is building strategic under water habitats to fish around. Can't remember the exact wording but it sounded a lot different than just throwing out tires or building a PVC thing to drop in the lake. It involved rock and concrete.

Habitat and vegetation are good things but a lake without timber is like a house without windows, or at least that's the way I feel. Those of us that fished Fork and Rayburn when they first opened remember how special and natural they were because they impounded them as they were.

I agree; but they are planning for as much recreation on that lake as they can get. It is also a shallow body of water with 70% of the lake only 20 ft. deep. Down by the dam there will be a few spots that it may hit 60 ft.. 16,500 acres is fairly small and they want those jet flees to have safe passage.

The tree clearing is mainly down by the dam. This is always done on lakes, to keep from compromising dam. The rest will be left. They are also planning to build concrete pyramids and large brush piles for fish attractant.
