This ProGator, what mount do you use for the ipad? I was thinking of getting the tab tight I think but didn't know how solid it is. That's what I use and it is solid. Never had it slip out even after shaking it around purposely trying to see if I could get it to come out. Only problem is the power button on the top of the ipad is kind of hard to get to. I have it set so that the screen doesn't time out so if I want to put it in sleep mode to conserve battery its a bit of a pain to get to.

My iPad is hooked to my cell service but I still download the maps beforehand cause service is usually sketchy on these east Texas lakes. I havent had any problems with the gps keeping up even with poor service but im no expert on that.

I've tried it. Worked great on an overcast day. But in full sunlight, it is hard to see and then the sun gets the screen hot and it shuts off.
It isn't worth it.

I bought an old ipad for this purpose. Make sure it's the type with cell service, not a wifi only. The ones with cell service has GPS built in; believe me, I made this mistake.
I really like to use the navionics app on the ipad because the night before, I can do some pre-work, mark some areas and waypoints. It's not easy to do this on the Lowrances HDS gen3 in your living room. In addition, I hook up the ipad to my HDS gen3 and can display the sonar anywhere in the boat as a second display. Another benefit is just in case the HDS goes completely out, I have another GPS to get around in.
AS noted, it doesn't do well with direction unless you're moving, but the HDS handles that part. I think this ipad cost my about $180. For me, it's worth it. Goodluck.

Steez, what tablet were you using? Heard that some are worse than others in the sun.

I used an iPad linked to a Raymarine Dragonfly Pro 5 mounted at the bow for over 2 years and it was certainly better than doing without. The biggest advantage was the ability to do real time charting with Navionics Sonar Chart Live. Map cards only have so much detail and are often not accurate at all. I was finally able to upgrade to newer Hummingbird units with Autochart Live. But I wouldn't hesitate to use the iPad again if that is what I had.

Some of the guys on the coast that fish skinny water use them. They fish water so skinny in those shallow running boats some no not even have a depth finder so an ipad works pretty good.

Well decided to take the plunge and mounted a Samsung tablet to my console with a ram mount. I am pleased with it so far. I am able to see the screen decently in the sun but haven't put an anti glare screen protector on yet. I would post some pics of the install, but can't seem to figure out how to do that. Total cost was about 120 dollars with buying a used tablet..

I tried it but having Lakemaster on my units and Navionics on Tablet, I would never choose the navionics over the lakemaster.
I downloaded navionics because 1 lake our club fished wasnt on Lakemaster card.
Now I only use navionics ap at home or at hotel.

If you are running Lowrance, check into their WIFI module (GoFree or something like that). It will cast the screen of your main unit to your tablet. Access to waypoints and your Navionics card via WIFI.
