Thinking about putting a motor on a yak once I purchase one just to get me farther out than I would want to paddle, any recommendations on a lightweight battery that will last?

I put a Minn-Kota 40 TM on my kayak. I bought a 35-amp/hour sealed, deep cycle AGM wheelchair battery for it. I didn't want to put a 70-pound battery in a 60-pound kayak. I didn't use it very much on my kayak, but have used it a lot on my 12-foot aluminum skiff. The skiff is about 400 pounds total. I have never come back from a trip with less than 12 volts in the battery. I changed the TM prop to a 12" model airplane prop, cut to 10". TM props are designed to pull or push a 2000 pound bass boat. The model airplane prop pulls my skiff just as fast as the TM prop, but uses less than half the current. It works for me. IslandJim

APC currently sells a 10x4 pusher prop that is made for a Minn Kota trolling motor. APC Prop In order to use one you need a spacer. I have one on my 30lb thrust trolling motor at full throttle it will push my loaded PA14 4.2-4.4mph compare to 3.6-3.8mph on the stock MK prop. Even with the speed increase, the amp draw lower than the stock prop!

Interesting, I will need to try it on mine. Thank you for the information. I too am searching for a lighter weight battery. Currently, I am stuck with a traditional deep cycle for my TM.

Though it may be overkill - If you can afford it - go with lithium - I recently picked up a smaller one from https://greenlifebattery.com/ to run lights, FF, and bilge on my porta-bote... doubles as an alternative/backup Kayak battery for same stuff on my kayak as well since i mount it in a crate. The initial cost of lithium is insane... but durability and weight make up for a LOT of that cost - especially on the larger batteries. You could probably get .2-.4 extra MPH easily just by the weight to power savings. You can build your own as well for significant cost savings - but lithium can be tricky so do so with care and testing.

People would say lithium's are the best but I question that thinking. Best only when it comes to weight maybe. A good battery I've used a lot of over the years for my boats are the ACDelco M29MF series batteries. No it's not lightweight but if charged correctly it last several years. I get a little deal on them so for the price on 1 lithium marine battery I can get about 25-30 acdelco standard marine batteries.
Yes a Lithium battery should if cared for properly last longer than a standard deep cycle battery but If I only get 1 year out of the standard batteries I still can get 25-30 years of batteries for that price and that 1 lithium battery would not last near that many years. Only real advantage I see is weight and for me it's not worth $2000+.

If you have the same mother, could you let me know what spacer you bought and where the spacer goes?

You can get them from any hardware stores. Bought mine at Lowes.

The prop I bought was an APC 12 x 4. I wanted a beefy prop, so I used the 12" and cut an inch off each end. I built a "prop spinner" out of a $.25 plastic wine glass, cut the stem off, and sharpened it, and mounted it on a disc I made out of a 1/2" Poly cutting board. Great laminar flow off the TM, by the prop and by the spinner. The prop was a right-hand, and the TM used a left-hand one, so I had three forward speeds and five reverses! I reversed the two big wires at the hand control, and it changed the rotation direction. Works great!
Other than the battery(about $65), I've got less than $10 in the set-up. YMMV IslandJim

Read on the Minn Kota site that they do not recommend lithium batteries for their motors. I thought I was going to go that direction in a year or so but not fast... "Can I use Lithium Ion batteries with my Minn Kota trolling motor? Minn Kota does not recommend the use Lithium Ion batteries. Lithium Ion batteries run at a higher voltage for longer periods versus traditional lead-acid batteries. This can lead to overheating of the motor circuitry and cause premature failures. Due to this Minn Kota does not support the use of Lithium Ion batteries for powering our trolling motors" https://www.minnkotamotors.com/support/f...-trolling-motor
