Over the weekend I took 35 of my NJROTC cadets on a leadership camp out. The place we went has a 90 acre lake so naturally that became part of my plan. Most of these kids are city kids and being outdoors was new to them. We had several confidence challenge courses as well as leadership scenarios. The kids did well.
Any that wanted to learn to fish went to the lake with me. We caught a large number of 5 to 6 inch sunfish, a few good crappie and about 2 dozen nice channel cats. We turned all the sunfish and crappie loose to fight another day and we kept 10 nice cats about 3 lbs each. I gave the kids a lesson on fish cleaning and filetting and cooking preps. Then we fired up the Coleman stove and broke out the cast iron skillets and had a fish fry. They loved it! For many of the girls that was the first time they even held a fishing pole. One little girl named Trinity landed the big fish of the day, a cat about 6 lbs. Her smile made my day.
Life is good Folks!
