I am currently looking for a 14'-16' boat, possibly a flat bottom, but not opposed to other styles. My budget is around 3000. The biggest "want" for me, would be a reliable motor, maybe a 12-20 horse. I am not worried about the accessories as i will more than likely add my own style to it. Any information from the forum would be great! Thanks in advance guys. PM for any leads!

Start looking on craigslist. Avoid carpet. You can probably find one in that range. Insist on titles for motor and hull. Do not buy without water test.

16ft wider the better. You really want a 25hp for a 16 footer. If you are going to modify it heavily, then I would suggested a riveted hull, they are lighter and easier to modify. Best outboard by none is the 2001-2006 2 stroke mercury. Power to weight is extremely good, no shifter paddle, light motor super easy to work on, very reliable. I agree with avoiding carpet if river fishing is the main purpose, kiwi grip is easy to apply and perfect for a jon.
