Most likely you are not keying on enough high percentage areas. Hit 20-30 spots a day. If you get around a group of fish they are likely to bite several different baits, including your Spinnerbait. The competition factor kicks in. Location & patterning is way more important that lure color, blades Ect..

You have to fish it like the want it. I love throwing a spinnerbait. I have a buddy that lives on Toledo Bend that I have a hard time getting to throw anything else. I catch a lot of shallow fish this time of year in the grass fishing it fast. They bite better when they dont get a good look at it. Color makes a difference as well as the trailer you put on in different conditions. Experiment and find the color and retrieve they like best. Start with white and chartruce with a paddle trailer the same color and go from there. Run it down the sides of downed trees and bump the cover or burn it through the grass, youll figure out what they want. This time of year get close to the cover and pitch it in. You dont always have to make a mile long cast, depending on where youre fishing.

It absolutely matters if you are not getting bit on you best spinner bait hole on the lake. That is why I have 5 different spinner bait tied on and on the deck. I am going to quickly find the one they want.
- 5 different blade combinations.
- 5 different blade colors.
- 5 different skirt colors.
- 1 is my tournament spinner bait that has worked in all water conditions. Not because it is the best; but because I go to the water to make it work the best and I have more confidence in it to get the job done. 2 is for stained water and 2 are for clear water.
- All are for windy conditions.

If the lake is calm I am going deep with other baits and will at some time during the day stroll a spinner bait in 20 ft. of water on the contour.

What characteristics of spinnerbaits do you change for clear vs muddy water?

*NEVER just reel it in! You gotta make that skirt flare and dance at different speeds.
*As soon as it hits the water, make it flare (pump the bait 2-3 times). A lot of strikes come at this point.
*The more wind, the better! You can catch em in no wind, but I believe it's more effective when the surface ripples break up the image of the bait. Lets face it, a spinner bait does not exactly look like anything a bass eats, so the more ripples, the better.
*Keep it high in the water column.
*Break the surface often, make it flutter on the surface to mimic a thrashing bait fish.
*Pumping it up and down can be effective. Example- Break the surface, let it fall a foot or two, pump it again. Lots of times, fish will hit it on the fall.

As I said, no expert by no means. We all have days where nothing works. Hope this helps

There are several characteristic differences for stained vs. clear water.
Stained Water:
- One of my blades is a deep cup Colo. the other is Hammered Bronze willow.
- The skirt on this bait is Green Pump./Chart stripe - Chart./Black Stripe - Black/Silver Stripe all giving a scale pattern with a Orange trailer.
- The other bait has both Colo. blades with the small blade being Deep Cup.
- The skirt on this bait is flat colors in the earth tones with a few strands of Orange and a Orange trailer.

Clear Water:
- One of my blades is a Chart. small willow the other is a Gold Willow. Both are down sized.
- The skirt is White/Purple Chart. stripe/with a few strands of Chart.. Trailer is White
- The other bait has one Silver and one Gold Willow. Both are down sized.
- The skirt is a Bluegill pattern of three colors all with scale stripe patterns. Trailer is Tomato/Blue Flake.

I like spinnerbaits, and they produce for me, but they aren't my favorite. I never use a trailer; I put on a trailer hook instead. Pump it occasionally, avoid throwing in sunny and calm days. My go-to spinnerbaits are War Eagles or Stanleys, in a classic white or bluegill pattern. Geofisher is right about the fact that I prefer a spinnerbait in shallow water; I don't understand the slow rolling on the bottom that was so popular back then.

I use a very thin double arm trailer that provides a soft subtile kicking action; not like a grub or Twin Tail trailer. These are the discontinued Stanley Pro Trailers. Now, Lurepartsonline is selling a knock off of the Stanley. The colors are a little off; but I already know they work as we tested them in Mexico this year along side the Stanley's with excellent results. Those not using the trailers were only getting half the strikes.

Slow Rolling:
In heavy cover I usually run the spinner bait just where I can image it. Slow Rolling is a technique that has it's place just like any other presentation. You have to find what the fish are wanting. I try to use both techniques on every cast. I run the spinner through the heavy sections where I can image it and as soon as it clears the worst of the trash let it fall and tick it along the bottom back to the boat. Many big fish have been caught in the Mid-Range depth that was following the bait then made the decision when the bait fell to the bottom. The other part of slow rolling is when the bait leaves the bottom very close to the boat. You want to be very ready when that bait starts to rise in the water column just a few yards from the boat.
