With the massive deep and clear water at Amistad, You would think that their would be one swimming and living amongst the deep trees where no one would ever through a lure.

I agree with most of the above: maybe tomorrow....maybe never. Da, right? But one of the best examples of how a fish can be caught that completely surprises everyone, that blows away anything ever caught from its waters and from a place off everyones radar for potential records: Possum Kingdom turned out a 16+ pounder in 1989 that is still in the top 25. Proof that while a lottery is a one-in-a-million....lotteries are still won. And yes there were still a lot of bass fishermen in 1989!

Ah the elusive State Record Largemouth Bass....
This question comes up pretty frequently when I talk to some of my guide friends at Fork. Is there a fish living in Fork that would beat the 18.18 record??
I have a theory about that. Many of the full-time guides on the lake agree with me or have at least in our convos. I believe there are a group of fish that live under the bridges at Fork that never leave there. I think they live, feed & will die at the bridge columns. They have everything they need there. I believe they will dump their eggs on the bridge cross members that are 10' down and swim off.
There is an abundance of gizzard shad, crappie, & bluegill that live under the bridges year round. I also believe these fish may never be fooled by an artificial lure. The story of the fisherman reeling up a hand-sized crappie only to have it taken off his line by a giant bass is all too frequent at Fork. Every once in a while one of these giants are landed on light tackle used by the crappie anglers.
I think years of fishing pressure will change the habits of the bass on any given body of water. This is just an opinion I have formed after more than three decades of fishing Lake Fork.
Is there a fish lurking in the depths (or shallows) of the fabled Lake Fork that would eclipse the current state record? I don't know but nothing would make me prouder than for The Old Girl to spit out one more GIANT BASS FOR THE RECORD BOOKS!!! I've caught some good ones under the bridges on crappie jigs. Had a bunch spit my crappie out when they saw daylight.

texas has issues producing consistant teeners So does every other state that doesn't provide a trout buffet! This is true

Do not see it getting beat in the next 25 years. Unless they change something like stocking trout in a smaller reservoir.

Here's a list of record bass by state. It shows how tough it is to break 18. Trout seem to definitely play a role in California, but it's also the climate. Then you have the George Perry fish, which after having reviewed all available information I don't believe was anywhere near the weight claimed.

I thought I read somewhere that California quit stocking trout in those small lakes because the state didn't have the money to do it. Jerry Brown spent all there money on illegal immigrants instead of things that needed done such as dam repair, road repair, etc.

If you look real close at the majority of the GIANT bass in Texas. They came from very fertile new lakes when the F-1 cross fish reached there maturity. Most of those lakes will never have the record broken as that window of opportunity is gone. The lake record at Henry is held by a fishing partner of mine. I told him when he caught that fish if someone did not beat it by the following spawn he would have it forever.

The size and weight of the George Perry fish is more of an opinion than a fact but if someone wants to believe it I wouldn't call them a liar. Anything's possible. I do believe there is a new state record swimming around in Lake Fork but the longer time goes on without anyone catching it the less likely hood of one ever being caught. I think the gene's have been diluted, the forage base (shad ) to get them to the size where they can eat bigger fish is not as plentiful, the spawns have not been as good as the spawns were back before all the spring tournaments ( imo ) and the shore lines where bass typically spawn are now missing a lot of the natural habitat. I think if one is not caught in the next 6-8 years we probably will never see one from Fork unless a lot more anglers start using live bait. Doesn't mean one won't come from another lake, we certainly have other lakes that are capable.

Kinda ironic that this is my 1818 post Saw a video on Mike Long's Instagram just a couple of days ago of a trout stocking in Lake Cuyamaca (Cali). So it's still being done somewhere.

I think a state record could be possible on a handful of lakes, but only during a narrow window during the cold of winter.
