My understanding is similar to Bear Traps. Technically, its only for rattlesnakes, but it helps with any venomous snake bite. The dog still needs to get to a vet for treatment. It just slows the effects of the venom and gives them a better chance of survival.
I havent spoken to my vet about it nor has my dog had the vaccine. I did take him to a snake breaking course and, even though he is as curious a dog as Ive ever seen, I dont think he will ever get close to a snake again. my dog is an English cocker retriever that I use for retrieving doves.....I'm not sure a snake breaking course would work with her simply because she is so intent on retrieving a bird, she would probably run right over top of a snake....we hunt a lot of harvested corn and peanut fields where rattlesnakes live during the summer and fall living on mice....when field is harvested,it pushes snakes to the fence rows around the fields and I'm always concerned when my dog goes into one of these grown-up areas to retrieve a bird....

My dear ol departed dog. was bitten several times through the years. Copper heads and cotton mouths. I would give her a Benadryl and she'd be fine in a day or so. I had coon dogs when I was a kid and saw them get bit by copperheads twice. Hardly even slowed them down. Had 1 get bit by a rattlesnake, dead before we got him to the truck.

I dont know, man. Its a pretty intense training they go through. There were mostly upland dogs at the one I attended with my lab. After the first snake introduction, most of them wouldnt walk within 10 feet of the next three snakes. More than one dog had been through the training before and they wouldnt go within 10 feet of any othe the snakes (two rattlers, a copperhead and a moccasin were all there). The trainer recommends they get the training every year as a refresher, but it was clear some of them had carry over. He engages each snake so that the dog sees, hears and smells it. Thats why its effective for hunting dogs, especially upland dogs.

I get them for my GSP. Told they work for all Texas vipers. She was sick the first time now she just gets a fever for a few hours.

Ask Bill Oxner on the THF. He knows a lot about bird dogs and dogs in general. He was a field trial competitor and judge for many years.
The only thing worse than a porta potty in the wintertime is a porta potty in the summertime.

Apparently, they have those in a test phase for humans but can't get any volunteers to try them on to see if they actually work.

My vet advised me that if you only have copperheads in your area, it wasn't really recommended. Copperhead bites can usually be treated with benadryl. I've had dog's bitten twice by copperheads and that's all they needed. Rattlers are a whole different matter.

I've had a lot of dogs bitten. Mostly by copperheads I assume but had a 25lb squirrel dog bitten by a 6' timber rattler and he survived. Never had one die.
Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it !

Our dogs get the snake shot yearly, I think its mostly for rattlers but our Doberman got bit by a copperhead right in the face and when we took him to the vet she said since it he had the snake shot it would be fine and just be painful and swollen a few days but would heal faster since had the shot and wouldnt be as bad.. his face doubled in size and you could see he was miserable but started getting better after that first day..
