Doc says that’s what I need to do next to confirm whether the big C is present.

Has anyone here has that done? If so, is it as much fun as it sounds?

Is it the kind of thing I should run to Vandy to have done...or will Dr Chris Urology and Bait be OK?

There are several methods used in the procedure. Ask your physician these questions. Every patient is different. And, hope it comes out negative.

I’d probably go to Vandy.

My dad did it about 5 years ago. His was cancer. Had to remove the whole prostate which disqualified him for robotic surgery. I hope it's nothing, but if it is you want to go robotic if you can. Remember prostate cancer is one of the more curable cancers you can have. Good luck and god bless.

Never had that done but I do know a bit about that type of cancer so I will attempt to ease your mind if you are the worrying type.

I assume you had a high PSA test is the reason for the biopsy. Hope they at least did two PSA tests a few weeks apart because its very easy for something as simple as a urinary track infection that you don't even know you have to give you a high reading.

There is no such thing as a good cancer but if you are going to get it than Prostate cancer would be near the top of the "good" list if you are 60+. Prostate cancer is usually a very slow growing cancer that in many cases they do nothing about except monitor it. Very few older folks die as a direct result of Prostate cancer because it usually grows so slow. If you are 60+ there is a better chance something else will you kill you before prostate cancer does unless its pretty far advanced at the time of discovery. Some studies have shown that as much as 80% of males in their 80's have it.

No I'm not a doctor. grin

Don't know if they told you this or not, but if you had... ahem... relations 72 hours or sooner prior to the test, then your PSA will be higher.

I went thru all of this. They knock you out and go in and take tissue samples from your prostate. You may or may not wake up with a catheter inserted...they will pull it out in a day...and yes it does hurt. Your report will be based on the gleason scale as far as how severe the cancer is if it is present. I was at the top of the scale. I opted for radiation instead of cutting it out...I did not like the potential side effects of the surgery. Ask your doc what they are. I went with Procure here in Oklahoma for the radiation. 45 days with sat. and sun. off. No side effects and it's been over 5 years now and my latest psa is 0.001.

You want more info feel free to PM me.

Didn't knock me out, used a local anesthetic. That was just as much fun as actually taking the samples. (NOT!)
12 samples, 1 came back less than 10% positive. No symptoms prior, other than PSA was 5.6. Second test 3 weeks later was 6.2.
45 radiation treatments later (and 6 years later) PSA stays between 2 and 3.
Hope yours come back negative.

My first biopsy was at age 59, taking 21 samples finding 5% of only one sample having cancer giving me a Gleason score of 6. Urologist told me I would most likely live a full life dying with the cancer rather than from the cancer. He did recommend the active surveillance meaning bi-annual PSA and future biopsies as may be recommended.
Had a second a year later and no advancement.
JCBs post is what I have gathered from many articles and advice from my first urologist.
I know you will do your research on a reputable urologist who does biopsies.
I pray yours turns out negetive.

Don
