Got on the water about 8:30am and headed to a cove on the west side. I wanted to see if there was any grass along a shoreline. Nope. I threw two top water baits without a strike. I went to many other spots without any luck at all. I tried crank baits, spinner baits, soft plastics and lipless crank baits. NADA. I spoke to 2 young men at the baffle dike that said they had some luck on a 6XD. I tried one with no luck.

I didn't see ANY grass anywhere. I don't know of it's because of a Winter die-off, spraying or both. One way or another, it is gone. Nothing but smooth bottoms with black, nasty filamentous algae in shallow water.

I hadn't been fishing for 2 months for one reason or another. I can't remember having ever gone that long. Not the prettiest of days, but it was nice to just get back on the water.

There is little to no grass in this lake, the guys with cast nets keep pulling everything out by the roots. The best bite is on plastic out in 12 to 18 FOW. Intake always has something going on. I caught some in the timber last trip out as well.

Rayzor, If your Triton is a coastal style we launched at the same time Saturday. I was in a blue and silver Charger. I caught all of my fish flipping the reeds. Most still had eggs but based on a couple, they are dropping them right now. I'm guessing they are last to the dance and not first though. A couple of boats said they were catching them on plastics in the trees. They both said they missed several. Set the hook and nothing. I'm guessing the fish were just moving the bait off a bed area.
There are some places that usually have grass and not in cast netting areas and it is barren right now too. On another note, the game warden has been out there a bunch the last few weeks and he seemed to be checking every cast netter Saturday.

I will be out there tomorrow. Hoping the wind allows me to stay out on some deeper spots. I'm not too fond of fishing the shoreline.

Did you get to go fishing 3/25? If so did you find any fish? I plan to go this Saturday.

You've had numerous knock-out Spring fishing trips on FCL.

Castnetters have very little to nothing to do with the lack of vegetation on Fayette. It seems to be just the evolution of the lake. I'm not fond of that witches hair moss either but this time of year there will be plenty of fish on beds with many still ready to spawn and a bunch that have spawned out. I've caught bedding bass until early May on Fayette. A Carolina rigged watermelon lizard "strolled"/drifted along shallow (2-5ft) flats should produce fish all day long unless you're on a super high pressure day. I also have several areas of the lake where I'll use a Norman Deep N+ in chartreuse/blue back. If you can bump the bottom in 7-10ft of water and come back with some vegetation or witches hair attached in prespawn areas...you're doing it right. Both shorelines along Oak creek park always hold spawners in the spring. Same with many of the back coves which have creek channels.

Let the cast netters work....less Tiliapia = more grass!

"Witches Hair" - filamentous algae. I've seen more on Bastrop this Spring than in years past, too. I don't know which is worse; the black dead stuff or the dark green living stuff.

Fayette has not had decent grass beds for at least ten years now. It was a blast in the shallows when it was in there thick, but that is all history these days. Spiny leaf Naiad grass is most common and even it is not as thick as it once was. Bass don't like this grass, but when that's all there is to hide in, they will use it to ambush their pray.
I think this spiny leaf naiad grass in Bastrop lake ended up there due to boaters fishing Fayette first for half a day and then going over to Bastrop to finish out their day and some of it was on their deck or trailer, therefore it was introduced to Bastrop. It has been in Bastrop for about five years now. It is located on the west side of the lake around discharge and working its way around the lake. I give it about five more years and it will be in every cove.
Fayette use to have Lilly pads too, two coves use to be pretty thick with it, but that stuff is history as well. It disappeared around fifteen years a go. Then came the reeds. They over took the shore line and then died back, but they appear to be coming back slowly. I hope they do myself, one can catch a lot of fish fishing in them and right up against them. Great cover for these bass.
