We are looking at a pre-owned 2017 Ford Explorer with roughly 20K miles.

Aside from having a few door dings fixed before we purchase, do you usually ask the dealership to come off of the internet sales price?

What do you think about these "fees"?
$150 doc fee
$299 window etching fee
$133 title fee
$7 inspection
$5 deputy fee
$40 county of issuance tax

I just give them a flat price I'm willing to pay, including TTL, and let them figure out how they play with the numbers.

Doc and window etching are dealer add on inflated options. never pay a dealer for add ons and you absolutely offer less. If they dont haggle always try free services and get it on a iou.

I would question the window etching charge. If it is a used car, was this not done when it was sold new? Seems high to me, but I could be out of touch.

What is a "Window etching fee"?

Is that where they put the Scorpion and "Durango" on the back window? Is it extra to have your last name added under that?

If so, I would pay that fee no problem.

After some 'discussions', with the salesman,
The last car I bought I wrote a check for what I would pay for the car, OUT THE DOOR.
He said no way,...I said show your manager.. he came back with a 'I cant believe he said OK,..'

Their numbers are very flexible, tell them what you'll pay or walk.

I always haggle hard over price, then make it crystal clear that the deal I accepted is price plus tax, title and license and nothing else. I have always won when the dealership tried to tack on more fees. One time I had to walk out the door for a car that I had ordered from the factory; the dealer called me the next morning and agreed to waive the disputed fee. Documentation fees are very common, but you can always say that you will take care of the paperwork yourself at the county tax assessor office so they don't get a fee for a service you will handle.

I mostly buy new cars but have bought a few used ones as well.

In every situation I offer an "out the door" price I will write a check for and tell them they can figure out how they want to show the numbers on the contract.

Out the door price includes everything including the price of the car I am willing to pay, 6.25 tax, and I add $150-200 for the misc fees like title and tags. This is how I decide what I am willing to pay.

I do what Lonestarson mentioned. I already know what number I am good with paying. They start all the BS and I write down the number and tell them it is a take it or leave it number. I hate the car buying BS.

As long as youre in control of the situation, you will always have them by their balls. You dont work for them, they work for you. If you go in with that mentality, youll get what you want. Dont act like Im your friend, dont call me pal, partner, bud, buddy, dont touch my arm, joke with me etc.

Always talk out the door price and let them work out the price/fees/tax however they want to.
