Has anyone ever hammock camped on the llano river between highway 87 and castell? Just curious if it could be done without trespassing.

I would like to know this as well, sounds like a blast.
Early on I decided that fishing would be my way of looking at the world. First it taught me to look at rivers. Lately is has been teaching me how to look at people, myself included. - Thomas McGuane

Texas has some complicated laws governing land access from streams or rivers. In general if you can navigate it while staying in the water your fine. My understanding of the law is that the public has the right to navigate / walk along along edge of the waterway entering or existing at public access points like a bridge. Most property lines begin at or very near the waters edge at normal level.
There lies the issue. For the stretch you mentioned you could only access from the hiway 87 bridge and the Castell bridge RR 2768 to the east. Heading west has a few more options but both are long distances.
Most trees are going to be up out of the river bed on private property so hanging a hammock would be difficult.

What about islands? Looking on Google Maps you can see several large islands on that stretch with a bunch of trees. Those islands are public and you don't need 300 year old oaks to hang a hammock.

But Google Maps doesn't tell you if that's the normal water level of the river so those may not be "islands" but rather private property and the river is out of its banks.
My advice would be to speak directly to the game warden who covers that area and ask for his guidance.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm going to pack a tent and a hammock. I'll let you all know which one I had to use.

If it is an island, it's public...

Anyone know what the water level is like right now? Just wondering how much dragging I will be doing.

I work in Llano and go out there to relax here and there. Water is lower right now...but fishable. There are plenty of islands out there, but islands w trees may be a little harder to find. Watch out for cottonmouths as they are thick out there!

Don't assume any land near a river in the western part of the state is public nor accessible to the public. The Devils river for example is under a different treaty and in that treaty only the water is not owned, even the river bed is owned by the land owner. So technically if you are wade fishing in the Devil's river you might be trespassing.. I'm not sure about the treaty that governs the Llano.. but if its a debate with a landowner at the rivers edge proceed with great caution as you might be within your rights but end up dead wrong or just dead.
