I’m looking at buying a new to me boat.. I’ve narrowed down between a 2005 Basscat Puma with 250 Verado and a 2005 Ranger Z21 w/250 HPDI.. I’m not real worried about speed.. 250 Verado has 338 hours 250 HPdi has 168 hours
Let me hear your likes/Dislike . Thanks

If that hpdi is all original that is a garage kept gem. That's some low hours. The ranger is a little bigger boat, more stable. The puma is faster. Both great boats but if the price is similar I'd go with the ranger.

Drive both and fish out of both and see which you like best.

Someone I know has the same ranger, nice boat, tons of storage space. Heavy, stable riding boat. Not familiar with the cat though.
Oh yea he did blow motor around 500 hours, could be fluke but .....

Yea I’ve heard several dislikes about the HPDI, is there something to that causes the dislike? Something to fix or address to keep it from shelling out? Can the motor be updated ??anything helps .. appreciate it

I was in boat when it blew, regular service, ran great just randomly died. No explanation from mechanic. He put brand new sho on it and has never looked back, the new 4 stroke sho is awesome on that boat now.

Nothing wrong with the hpdi. Get all the filters and routine maintenance done. I know some with 1000+ hours

The hpdi got an update in 07 i believe that corrected the issues. The 200 hpdi is indestructible, for some reason the 250 & 300’s have more issues. That said get filters and routine maintenance done and they are great motors

My HPDI experience was a bit miserable........
2007 200 HPDI blew 4 years ago. Replaced power head for $10k, then blew a again one year later. Got new SHO and all seems to be good.

My 09 HPDI lost #6 cylinder back in February. I bought it with 118 hours on it in Dec 2013 and it blew with 402 hours. I have heard nightmare stories about folks losing HPDI powerheads with less than 200 hours. That being said, I also know folks who have HPDI's with 500+ hours on them and one with almost 1000 hours. It's a carp shoot with any 2 stroke in my opinion. You just never know.

Everything on your bass boat is broken......You just don't know it yet.
