I was at Sulphur Springs Fish Camp (just upriver from CBSP) this past weekend with some friends.

On Saturday evening (400-730, bite turned on at 645) I caught 7 whites and a couple of my friends caught the same amount as well. I was wading the middle of the river and tossing my lures toward the east bank.

Sunday (830-1100, bite ended around 10) I waded up from Gorman Falls to Sulphur Springs Camp (3/4 mile or so). I was casting upstream and was targeting swift currents that were shooting through the rocks. I also saw fish swirling so I would sight cast to those spots. I think I caught four whites in seven casts once. My total on Sunday was 13 whites. Casting up river was the trick that worked for me on Sunday. All fish were caught on a pink rooster tail. Sunday morning we ran across a pretty good sized moccasin at the Sulphur Springs Camp. We spoke to a guy who had been camping for a week. He said he had killed seven moccasins over the course of his trip. Thankfully we didn't see any when we were actually in the water fishing.

thanks for the report. looks like you guys had a great time and caught some good fish. I ran into a moccasin last time I was there too and found a different spot to fish haha. Not sure what the rain did to the river but I plan to try it out this weekend

In the 70's when it was Lemon's Camp we would go 2-3 times a year late March or early April and catch all we wanted to clean.

Thank you for the report and photos.

That is a non-venomous water snake as opposed to a venomous water moccasin/cottonmouth.

I'll humbly offer up a suggestion for next time. Your luck may improve with a silver bladed rooster tail in either white, chartreuse or yellow (or a combination thereof).

Tight lines!

I fished CBSP today (sorry, no photos). Got in around 9 pm last night and pitched the tent in the dark, then woke up early and had a few minutes to kill before checking in at the ranger station. Decided to throw a white rooster tail at the boat dock while I waited for the ranger to arrive. Caught and released a couple of decent sized males (12 to 14 inches) before checking in with the ranger.

Once officially checked in I put on my waders and rigged a brown and black Clouser minnow on my fly rod. Walked into the river from the farthest parking area upstream from the ranger station and fished from 9:30 am to a few minutes after high noon. Lost the first four fish along with four Clousers because I was trying to muscle them in. Finally relaxed and let the rod do the work. Landed about twenty and took ten to the cleaning station at the park.

I expected it to be super crowded, but it was just me and a couple of other guys on the water. They were also catching lots of fish. In fact, they seemed to be doing a little better than I was.

Was the river in pretty good shape in spite of all the recent rain?

I bet a fly rod is fun. I would have the line wrapped around my neck if I tried it though.

The head on that snake does look kinda skinny and not triangular but we weren't getting close enough to find out. On Saturday, I tried a white rooster tail with silver blade, yellow w/silver, chrome w/blue mini rattle trap, black over white lil' fishie and a silver slab/spoon. The fish didn't bite anything until about 645pm or so. I think they just happened to turn on and then hit anything thrown at them. I just happen to be using pink at the time.

By the way, thanks for the tips. I am mostly a saltwater guy and only get to do this type of fishing once a year or so. We use ultralight gear and have a blast. It was so much fun that I am making an impromptu camping trip to our local lake next weekend with my two boys. We are gonna try to catch some crappie off the pier.

I felt that way for a long time, and there is a little bit of a learning curve, but if someone as clumsy as I am can do it, you can too. It is a lot of fun.

This was my first time camping there and only my second visit, so I don't have a lot to go on...There wasn't any debris associated with flooding but the water was murky. Of course, murky water is the norm for every part of the Colorado that I have fished.

Fished this morning and caught 8, all males. It was pretty slow, I only fished til about 930am. Talked to a couple older gentlemen and they said the afternoon bite has been way better than the morning. Saw tons of shad and actually snagged one and put it on my jig head and caught a decent largemouth on it. Hopefully get out there a few more times before they head back to the lake

that looks like a rat snake. Yes, it eats rat as it is named and it is non venomous.

Actually, it's not a Water Moccasin OR a Rat Snake. It's a Diamond Back Water Snake (Nerodia rhombifer). Non-venomous, harmless fish and frog eater.

Since fishing is a sport, I guess that makes us athletes...
