You can get a Shimano Casitas for under $100 and probably won't see a big increase in distance or performance from other baitcasters. I would opt to spend the money on your rod.

On the deck of my BassCat right now G.Loomis JWR 854C NRX, $550.00 paired with an Academy Menace reel I paid $39.95 for. Pretty much sums up how I see the issue.

There are to many quality rods and reels in the $150 range for this to be a serious debate. IMO

If it's for dragging lures on the bottom where sensitivity is important I'd spend more on the rod than the reel. If it's for casting moving baits like crankbaits, bladed jigs, spinnerbaits and such I'd consider spending more on the reel but would still usually opt for the more expensive rod. There are so many good dependable reels in the $100 range these days. This is spot on

$200 rod, $100 reel.
Lews speed spool is $100 and will last as long as any other reel.
Scratch that.. Get a $200 reel like the Curado K or Concept A or Lews Tourny Pro, $100 Falcon Bucco.. That's a mean setup right there for $300
