I changed over from a hand controlled TM to the Ulterra and I don't use the foot pedal much, I do use the directional buttons and I haven't noticed a delay but then again I used the hand control for a lot of years. The one thing I'm having a problem getting use to is the speed ramp up when you step on the momentary button, I'm use to having instant response. But that is the only downside from me so far.

I had the Ultrex on a 99 skeeter with it on the deck. When I traded for the Ranger we moved it to the Ranger. The Ranger is recessed for the foot control. We took the screws out of the metal trim around it and placed the foot control in it and replaced the metal back in place. Fit like a glove.

How does the anchor feature work for you? The two I've used wouldn't hold worth a darn in windy conditions.
Fouz the gen 1 spot lock feature for MK (think terrova and first year ulterra models....non bluetooth) was good and the only time it struggled was in light and variable winds. The motor would wonder all over the place. Now fast forward to 2018. Both the Ultrex and Ulterra (bluetooth model) have the gen 2 spot lock with the added GPS puck. These new units are incredible at keeping you within a foot or two of where you want to be regardless of wind or current.
I have experience with both TM's and here are my opinions/thoughts on the two:
Ulterra:
I own three of these. One gen 1 and two gen 2's. I used the gen 1 for two years without a single issue and I used it hard. Bought a brand new 2018 Ranger and the gen 2 lasted 10 freaking trips before not wanting to come back up one day. So I bought another gen 2 and so far so good. I still need to take the first gen 2 in for warranty.
Pro's:
1.) The obvious is the auto stow and deploy. I'm 40 but have had two neck surgeries and this feature is absolutely priceless. There are days when I am guiding where I get up from my seat 3 or 4 times total throughout the day.
2.) I fish Mexico a lot....both Sugar and the Mexico side of Falcon. What are there a lot of? Nets. The ability to raise and lower the height of the motor with the remote is awesome. Also works fantastic in skinny water situations.
3.) I like having no recessed TM tray and the ability to disconnect the foot pedal and get it out of the way saves a lot of room and people tripping over it.
Con's:
1.) Response time. When you're fishing shallow and trying to dodge stumps and other debris you better plan ahead because if you allow something to sneak up on you and you're clipping along you are done. There is no knee jerk quick way to snap the head in one direction or another to avoid the object.
2.) Foot pedal leaves a lot to be desired and just doesn't feel as connected as the remote. With that said a big reason possibly is the fact that I use the remote 99.5% of the time and have a much better comfort level with that.
Ultrex:
I have never owned one, but have helped several clients get more comfortable using the new tech.
Pro's:
1.) Foot pedal has a great feel and at times might even be a bit too responsive.
2.) Goes along with number 1......you can navigate shallow water objects with ease as response time is instant.
3.) Foot pedal fits the recessed trolling motor tray that most newer boats have and no reason to fabricate a cover for the tray.
Con's:
1.) Reliability. People talk a lot about the concern of moving parts and the reliability of the Ulterra and all are certainly valid concerns. With that said the Ultrex launch was an absolute certifiable disaster. And don't kid yourself they are still having plenty of issues. With anything in life, boats included.....you can get a lemon with anything from outboards, to electronics, to TM's. I know of very few folks that bought an Ultrex and have had zero issues from word go.
2.) Not being able to quickly adjust the height of the TM at a push of a button.
The verdict? Get a good one out of the box and I think you will like it whichever you decide to get.

I have had a Terrova with iPilot Link, linked to my Humminbirds. Loved it. The only downside to it is the foot pedal / remote control when I got around the rip-rap on a damn, or got into the trees. Loved and used the heck out of the spot lock function. I also used the follow the contour and that was quite nice too.
Sold that boat.
I will be buying an Ultrex with iPilot Link soon. I hope that helps.

I bought the ulterra and it works well. Im 72 years old and need the help. My 3 young sons in their 20s love the electric stow/deploy and you can run it up quick to keep the transducer off the rocks from anywhere in the boat. This is the best thing that has come out in years. That 15ft talon on the back is great too.

Just got an Ulterra, made four trips with it and absolutely love it. Kinda scary my first solo trip with it, backed the boat in the water and was sure hoping the stow and go worked. But no issues it performed flawlessly. I was fishing Belton Sunday and the ramp was pretty crowded when I came in, guided to the dock, got out and moved the boat off to the side while I got the boat trailer. I was back in some shallow creek beds and really appreciated having the trim up feature on the motor. It was kinda windy Sunday and my spot lock seemed to hold pretty darn good.

They are both good motors. Can you get on a couple of boats that have them and see for yourself? I have an MG Xi5 if you wanted to check them out.

The Ultrex works great for me.. We were fishing a brush pile when the guy hung up and broke off. He hit the spot lock. I stayed at the back of the boat still fishing while he retied. When he was ready to fish again he left it on spot lock and we worked the brush pile till we were ready to move. Love it. Just be prepared it will head into the wind but the boat will stay on location. The wind was around 10/15 that day.
