The tracking, observing, and fishing are fun; but I could do without the crowds and the early spring time wind.
Much prefer the peace and quiet of fishing deep when it gets over 100 degrees or in the fall when a lot of people are hunting.

A couple of springs ago on Fork I saw a 10lber cruising a spawning flat with a smaller male. She was really spooky and not on a bed but she seemed to stay in that general area. Checked on her periodically the next couple of days but nothing had changed. She was not on a bed. Finally about mid day on Day 3 she locked down. Went over and caught the male real quick the first time on a Texas rigged creature bait Let him go and then started working her. She was not having any interest in a craw or creature bait other than running up on it when I got near the sweet spot on the bed. She would nose down on it but never take it. Tied on a swimbait I use for bed fishing that is basically like a flipping jig molded in a gill type body. Has a big 6/0 stout hook and made from ultra soft plastic. Swam it over the bed and she swam off. I let her come back and threw it past her and as I brought it by she had no interest at all even as I let it nose down on the sweet spot. Still nothing. The last cast I swam it over the bed and it got just past the bed she launched at it like a missile and crushed it. I landed her, took a picture and quickly let her go and then came back a time or three just to sit and watch her that day and the next. I never threw again at her. No one else had messed with her I guess as she did her thing and eventually left. Cool week for sure and I learned a ton by watching her. I enjoyed reading this story! Im a little surprised but not unhappy about the poll results so far.

I hate it in a tournament. Love it for fun. This how I feel about it as well but have had some good success fishing for bedding bass in a tournament.

I mark beds with a red flag marker on Rayburn for everybody to get a shot.
You may not see the bed but stay there at least an hr on every flaw you see!
Thanks, Billy

Well I love it so much I schedule my vacation time around the spawn. Bed fish seem to taste better for some reason. caviar

I DO NOT enjoy bed fishing that much, BECAUSE I AM BLIND IN ONE EYE!!!!!!!!!!! If you cannot see out of one eye, it makes it nearly impossible to see the fish, UNLESS THEY ARE VERY LARGE! Then my depth perception is off and it is VERY FRUSTRATING for me to fish bed fish, that is why I DO NOT bed fish, for the most part. Now, if I run across a bed I can see, I go past it, remember where it was and try to come back and fish it later. But, that does not always work. I see 20/400 out of my right eye, so I hvae to make my left eye do all the work, in LIFE, driving, hunting, shooting, etc..
Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

I think enjoy tooling around looking for big ones more than anything. If it's not the biggest fish I've caught that day, I get bored with it pretty quickly. I try and stay sharp on the process though, because I know one day I'm going to stroll up on Bertha.
Smallmouth bed fishing is a whole different ball game. That can also get boring because it's so easy you almost feel guilty!

I spent two days a few years ago learning to sight fish on Amistad with Kurt Dove. He made it look easy, but it is not. I'm not very good at it, and my eyesight is not good enough most days to get a clear look at what the fish is doing. My much younger partner is a different story. If he's on one, I'll either try and watch, or fan cast around trying to catch one we can't see.

I love bed fishing and look forward to it every year. I've learned how to find them and catch them over years of trial and error.

I wish I was doing it right now. And tomorrow. And the next day. I love the challenge of reading it's body language and figuring out what each fish will react best to. Each one can be different. Fun game to play in my opinion.
