So a buddy and I are fishing last week, I’m using his rod because of one of mine broke recently and he has a jig tied on. I get bit, set the hook and his rod shatters... he sees this and wonders WTF? Do I being a buddy offer to pay for the rod exchange under warranty, offer to split it with him or do nothing?
What’s the best advice? It’s not like I intentionally broke the rod or slammed it into the console on purpose. It just shattered on the hook set, sounded like a .22 going off...

It probably was no fault of yours that it broke.
The right thing to do it offer to pay for it regardless.

I've broke a couple of rods that I didn't own... Always gave them some cash for a replacement.

The right thing to do it offer to pay for it regardless. This. And if he is a reasonable guy, he wouldn't accept any money, since he would understand it wasn't your fault. Now, if you did the silverback gorilla swing hookset, then maybe you did cause it to shatter. But, I doubt it. Did you catch the fish?

I would scrap the friendship and never talk to them again. Just move on and dont ever tell your next fishing partner about this story.

I wouldn't even have to think about it. I'd order him a brand new one.

It all depends on how much dirt you have on him. In all honesty though I would offer but if he is a real good buddy he wouldn't accept because through your normal interactions with one another it will all wash out in the end.

You were using his rod because yours broke... and then you broke his. LOL You gotta replace it. After all, you are the common denominator.

If the rod is under warranty do the leg work for him. If not buy him a new one.
