What length is best... 6 footers... less ? spinning rod for throwing the bigger cranks for instance ? I cannot see my self dealing with baitcasters on the Yak. And don't want to take more than 2 rods...lol I have experienced the required patience and uhmm... finesse of re-stringing longer rods while in the cramped quarters of the Yak.

I only use baitcasters and nothing less than 7ft. I also take 4 rods with me when I go fishing. I would start with whatever you're comfortable with and adjust from there

Whatever you're comfy with. I usually take 2 but sometimes 3 rods, 6-6.5 feet. Light spinning, medium spinning, and a baitcaster.

You want a rod length that will clear the front bow of your kayak when fighting a fish. You want a rod length that is manageable inside the kayak. If vertically storing rods, there are some low bridges where you might have to temporarily hold them in your lap if going under the bridge.
Thus, some of this will be kayak dependent.
For me, somewhere between 6'10 and 7'4" works well.
Lots of personal preference with rod/reel types
If you only want to bring two rods, I'd bring one 7ft medium+ spinning rod and one 7'2 heavy baitcaster. Some manufacturer's medium is more like a medium+ (Abu Vendetta comes to mind)
I tend to throw small cranks on an Abu Vendetta 7' medium+. Much easier to cast into the wind. I actually use a Abu Vendetta MH for deep diving cranks--the drag system on spinning reels just works better for crankbaits for me. The MH Vendetta is more like a MH+ --perfect for throwing or trolling bigger crank baits.
Low profile baitcasting reels are smaller/more compact and easier to fit along the the side of a kayak. Baitcasters work better for me frog fishing, Trig, jigs, crig, pitching.
If you like finesse fishing and you could be talked into bringing 5 rods, I'd go:
6'10 true medium moderate action spinning rod (jerkbaits, very small light cranks, small topwaters) 7' true medium fast action spinning rod (drop shot, light split shot, ned rig, slider head) 7'medium+ fast spinning rod (senkos, flukes, square bills, light shaky head) 7' MH spinning rod fast action(deeper cranks, heavier shaky head, light t rig) 7'2 heavy baitcaster moderate fast action (frogs, pitching/flipping, crig, Trig)

I'll check out the Abu Vendetta at lunch today. Nice to be just a few minutes from Bass Pro in Grapevine a good crankbait rod is what I want.

I am comfortable kayak fishing with rods ranging from 5'-9'. I prefer a 6' two piece spinning rig for freshwater kayak fishing and a one piece 7' casting rig for saltwater. If I bring a spare rod n reel it's usually a two piece spinning rod that can be stored out of the way in the dry hatch. I think its best to choose your fishing rod based on the type of lures and fishing you will be doing. Fish with gear that works best for you. In my opinion, two rods is too many if you can only use one at a time. I tend to paddle 4-6 miles when kayak fishing, so I try to keep my gear load and clutter to a minimum.

I have various sizes like most do here.
If I am in my canoe standing almost all of the time, I don't mind a longer rod, say something in the 7 ft. range. Better for long casts.
But, if you are seated most of the time, if you are fishing up tight around docks, under branches, if you are more finesse than power, you simply can't imagine what you are giving up by not having a short rod along with you.
My spinning favorites are a 5'6" Medium, 1/4 to 5/8s rating, fast tip; and, a 6 ft. MH, 3/8 to 3/4s, fast tip.
For a short casting rod, I use a 5'6" Medium, fast tip. Yes, it has essentially a pistol grip.
Casting accuracy will be much higher, power much greater (shorter lever).

I tend to fish for Crappie and then some Bass catching attempts.. Crappie, I'm set. An inexpensive Cast-Away rod seems to do fine for most purposes, but not for medium or large crankbaits. Its fun to buy gear

The Bass Pro spring classic starts on Friday--might see some good deals on rods/reels.

I'm interested to learn what crappie fishermen use, not just the pole but a spinner or bait caster. I fish over structure and via a float for the spawn.
