So whats the deal with using soap for bait? Any good or no? I've heard there's no better, but seems like everyone I've come across who knows about it, heard from someone else. So are we snipe hunting or is there any truth to it???

I know of people in the past who put white bar soap on trotlines and caught fish with it. It has definitely been done.

It's most productive in moving water, back water. Flooded rivers and creeks. Ivory, for the money, is the way to go. Fish it shallow, let it float. I've not had any luck with it in the lake. It mostly catches blues in my experience.

Soap is widely used in the rivers around here during the spring. It is not a rod and reel bait, trotlines and drop lines. Clear water and a current that will keep it moving so it "flashes" Around here, it is mostly channel cats that we catch. Zote cut into 1/2" squares works best. There are some homemade soaps around but seem hard to find now a days.

Natural baits are way better but I have caught lots of fish on trotlines in Lake Palestine on trotlines and a few in the Navasota River on limb lines with it. Cut fresh carp is way better. Trotliners need to make friends with the bowfishing guys and bait would be a non issue. Rough fish would actually get some use!
Try Zote. It's fun to say you did and it worked. All the Mexican grocery stores carry it. Don't buy a bunch of it at a time. It gets flaky and not good after a year. Make sure you tell your wife about it or she'll think you've been with Sancha and not fishing!

Don't know if it works, but I remember seeing it on a throw line over 50 years ago.
