Will be in matagorda in early march and was looking for any type of advice on how to catch any kind of fish. (Shark, flounder, reds, sheepshead)Will be staying along the Colorado river with a small dock available. Not familiar with saltwater fishing so just looking for any kind of tips. Just looking to get hooked up on anything and have a good weekend. Thank y'all in advance!

If you are staying on the old river, at night you can catch sand trout and sometimes speckled trout at night there if you have lights to shine into the river. Live or dead shrimp will catch all kinds of fish right off your dock. Are you going to have a boat to use?

We have access to a lighted dock and will primarily fish that. I have no idea about the surf tho. How far out do we have to be to catch black tip? And what's the best bait if we can't get any ladyfish?

Before you do any wade fishing into the surf do some checking around. There are some dangerous undertows in some of those areas as the tides start moving. that's true for any of those areas that reach out into the gulf.
If you don't have shrimp gulps and "spec rigs" will work for you.

are you using a boat , kayak or bank fishing ? Im a kayaker and I know a few spots that can be productive for you. Also will you be fishing with bait or lures ?

Bank fishing. Either on the river or in the surf if the weather is good. And might use some artificial shrimp if we find a good spot but prolly mostly just shrimp. Is shark fishing good anywhere?

Sharks can be caught at the beach or the jettys. Use the shrimp to catch Whiteing, then use the Whiteing as bait for sharks. Probably going to be some big redfish there too, they will bite on cut Whiteing.

I see a lot of people headed down the beach getting away from the crowds and setting up surf fishing rigs and shark rigs. Usually start seeing them about 4 miles down the beach . It gets pretty rough down there so be prepared for that. I myself always kayak the bay but i will wade the beach areas when I see birds working the waters or a good runoff flowing . Good luck to you

Approx how far out will I have to have a bait to catch a shark? I can bring a kayak but if I only have to have my bait out a little ways I don't wanna bother bringing it. Thank y'all for all the tips already.

If you don't mind getting wet, you can wade out to the first bar and cast from there. Waders are great for this. I've caught sharks in knee deep water, but I always thought the farther out the better. If you can cast to the 3rd bar your set. A kayak makes it very easy to ferry the baits way out there.

Do I need to look for an undertow and try to fish off that for baitfish? I have a ton of questions I know. Just don't get down to the coast but maybe once a year if that and have never been productive at it.

I've never been to Matagorda, but there appears to be a large pier jutting into the gulf. I wonder if it's lighted, and how it is for fishing overall?

I have fished Matagorda several times including the river, the surf, and the marsh. If you are going to fish the surf, go left once you hit the beach and go down a few miles until you hit the shell "banks". There will definitely be less people and that is a good thing. Be sure to watch your tide tables. We have caught bull reds, black drum, shark, sting rays, trout, etc. from the surf. As a general rule of thumb, we typically wade to the first sand bar and cast from there. But depending on the tide, current etc, we might also just cast from the wade gut. I am not a surf fishing expert by any means but I have caught my share. I have never fished the jetties because I don't like crowded places and slippery rocks. I have also caught everything above from the river bank at the RV park. Hopefully you will have a 4WD.
