 Is paper weight charts that far off from scale weight?

Caught A 23 1/2" on houston county which is an over for us put her on the scale and only gave a measly 6 1/2, paper weight chart says 23 1/2" should weigh 8.31 give or take. But would it b that drastic of a weight gap?

You need to push them up to where the mouth is closed. Just by the pic, it's looks like it would go about 22.25 which would be about 6.5 lb by your chart.

I measured proper weigh but couldnt hold it and take pic with one hand

All depends on the fish & it's habitat. I've brought plenty 22" fish to the the weigh in on Georgetown weighing in the 5lb range. Had fish on Lake Austin (back when it had grass) short & fat. This one was 24" flat, 10.13lbs

That is a skinny fish. You get credit on paper for weight taken away on that pot-bellied 15" weighing 3+lb.
Northern strain tend to be lean and mean like your fish... Also, males tend to be lean and mean like your fish...
We had an over on Athens once that on paper was credited 10.25lbs. It actually weighed 6.75lbs, like yours!

Yes, they are. Some fish are fat, some are skinny. The chart doesn't measure that. That's why I like actually bringing fish to the scales.

Lots of variables involved like time of year, lake, DNA, etc. But more times than not, the paper chart is on the high side.

Paper guesstimates aren't a "joke," they are just averages.
For all the men on this forum who are 6 feet tall, there is an average weight but individuals will vary quite a lot. I suspect 15" bass don't deviate from the average nearly as much as 6' men do.
TPWD makes no claim that it will accurately reflect the LMB you catch.
There sample size was 3,178 fish and that isn't very many to cover fish from 10" to 30" measured incrementally every 1/8th of an inch.
My guess would be that it is more accurate at the lower lengths, a very rough statistic at the top end. How many 29" bass were weighed?
***What I think would be a cool statistic is for people to catch a bass, record what they "think" it weighs prior to weighing it, compare that to what it actually weighs on a scale. Some experienced anglers will be very accurate I suspect.

Brad Hey Brad, Great points. The regression analysis is not a joke. It's probably most accurate right around the median fish length. The 95% confidence intervals of regression lines/slopes are almost always the smallest near the median value and get wider the lower and higher you get (out at the tails). Here's an example below. Paper charts that do not incorporate girth are worthless unless the chart is specific to that water body. The charts that incorporate length and girth are more accurate.

should weigh 8.31 give or take ^^  ^^ This! Too many times, paper club members go out and say "I caught 30 lbs!" you see the pictures and its 18-22 lbs...

Fayette County fish and paper weight charts can be pretty close.
