Went into my local Academy Sports and picked up a few clearance items. Decided to check the price on one of those price scanners in the fishing section. Every item rang up at the full retail price. I asked the manager if the clearance price would be charged at the checkout. He said no, but since I "found" the mistake he would "honor" the clearance price. On a hunch, I randomly picked up and scanned numerous other items on clearance...every item rang up full retail. He then admitted they have had this problem for years and that he would "notify corporate" again. He stated that it is up to the customer to ensure that the correct price is charged. My guess is that corporate is fully aware of this and more than happy to take your money.

How is that price gouging? Things go on clearance and then come off all the time. The issue here is that the employees just haven't pulled the tags off yet.

I've seen that a lot, I take a picture on my phone to avoid the hassel, works great. They think marking something on clearance is just hanging a tag...get what ya pay for as far as help I guess..

I always scan/check the prices. Many times the discount/clearance price only applies to certain colors, size, etc. Other shoppers sometime put items back on the wrong peg or maybe someone else put an item on the wrong peg.
I am sure Academy makes mistakes too. However, clearance items tend to be store to store. So, unless it's an advertised sale then it's always a good idea to double check with the scanner there in the fishing tackle isle. Academy will make it right if you do find a discrepancy.

The thing most people don't understand about retail stores (Academy in this example) is that, usually, the price an item rings up for, is the price corporate sets. The store itself has no ability to make an item ring up at a different price than what is set by corporate.

It has always been and will always be the customer's responsibility to ensure the price listed is what is charged. Mistakes are made, always know what you "should" pay based off the shelf tags and ensure it is the correct item. This happens in the grocery store more than you realize! It is not price gouging, it is usually an honest mistake (coding error).

Well Academy is either responsible or irresponsible. Really no middle ground. Honest mistake or not, it is still Academy's mistake. He stated in the OP that it has been going on for years. The OP was just giving you a heads up.

Academy is notorious for forgetting to take things off clearance. You find new product at pennies to the dollar that should be full price.

Use to get Oil for 19.99 cause they mis labeled it. I had a picture of the price on the shelves on my phone. always got it for 19.99. They have since fixed the issue.
