SeaproTodd came down yesterday and we split our time between deadsticking and fishing deep structures with Mepps. Todd is experienced at deadsticking, and I hoped to observe and learn how he does it. Recall I went with lenahorse and etu early this month at Tawakoni and caught some nice hybrids and stripers - but only five fish for the day. I am hoping to experience an outing, which I hear others experience, where we catch good numbers deadsticking. Bottom line - we caught a total of 28 fish: 26 whites, a hybrid and a crappie. None were caught while drifting with drift sock out and deadsticking. We saw tons of bait and a lot of fish around them, but they just wouldn't take the bait. We had about 5 or so light taps on our lines but never hooked up. We spent about half our time from noon to 5:45 pm doing four deadsticking drifts. The other half we fished deep structures using Mepps technique. We tried Greenhouse Ridge early but not much there. After finishing deadsticking we went back to Greenhouse Ridge and marked fish. We caught 10 fish there. By that time the south wind had let up some, so we went north to east end of Long Ridge and found fish there. We caught eleven there in about 30 minutes. By that time it was a little after 5 pm and I wanted to try Mid-lake Hump, so we went and finished up there. We caught six more including Todd's hybrid and crappie. Todd did catch one or two with his deadsticking rig sitting over Mid-lake Hump as his thumper was thumping. Re deadsticking, Todd says the best time of year for it is in December when the water temp is moving down from 60 to 50 degrees F. He said it is harder to catch them now with temps in the 40's. I'm sure Todd will weigh in on deadsticking tips. Below are some pics of the trip: Todd with crappie caught on his deadsticking rig Todd with hybrid Yours truly with white bass A nice white bass A double

Very interesting comparing the 2 techniques. Tomorrow it could be the other way around. SPT needs to step up his game. LOL I want to fish Cedar Creek with someone who knows the lake next time. Im coming down there one of these days and will contact you ahead of time. Maybe we can fish together.

Son got a science competition this morning and was busy. Great write up, DC, and thanks for the invite again. Man I love your home, hood, and fishing set up. It's paradise to me! Beverly even fixed fresh hamburgers for us after fishing. Yum! On deadstick: DS is dead on hubbard right now once the water temp got to 44f 10 days ago and I heard twok DS is dead too. IMO, we at at the end or tail end of DS season. But the recent reports from the CC guys gave me hope to try CC. So I packed my DS gears and wanted to show DC the rope. Also I wanted to learn winter mepps cuz I've never winter mepps before. It was my 2nd time fishing CC and first time DS there. We only had 5 very light bumps down at the deeper south on our drifts but I take that as a learning experience. What I learned is that there are way too much baits down deeper south. We were in 50fow to 45fow drifts and the baits were stacked from 30ft to 40ft and never desolved or thinned out by predetor fish. A few hybrids would show up once in a while but they were under the baits gorging food and the shad never scattered out. Our graph pics were never ideal for DS ing. Below are some ideal deadstick graph pics. The baits should slowly clear out and the well defined arches group in and suspended and remained follow during the drift. The wind got calmer and we headed north and saw two boats deadsticking at a distance. They were spotlocked on top of deeper creek channels I believe. If we had more time, I would try DS there. Then again, IMO, the better time to DS or learn DS without getting discouraged is when the water temp trends from 60 to 50f. Dennis I set a reminder to self to DS with you next December lol. Don't fire me yet, DC! Lol On mepps: Most of my fish caught were jigging the mepps vertical under the boat. I think DC caught half casting mepps out and half vertical jigging. We were on structures, spotlock, and thumper going. But I have to let everyone know one thing. Besides being a master mepps catcher, DC spends good amount of time scanning the structures until he finds good numbers of fish, otherwise he moves on to the next structure and CC has plenty of structures too not far apart at all. One time DC spent close to an hr scanning all sides of each hump and then another hump. I just sit back and watch the graph and the figure "8" trails were plentiful around the ledges of the humps lol. DC works extra hard at finding fish and that skills don't show up on the reports lol. Anyway, thanks again DC! I think we need lots and lots more practices trips lol

Very interesting comparing the 2 techniques. Tomorrow it could be the other way around. SPT needs to step up his game. LOL
Thats very funny, Jeff! It's the game/sport of fishing and we know how the game is played

Help me understand. I thought dead stick was spot locked (not moving) and holding the bait still. If you drift the bait is moving and with water temps below 50 the fish just don't seem to be interested in anything moving much at all.

It is Steve. Most times I am spot locked or occasionally moving very little with the trolling motor when I deadstick. It works for a while yet when drifting may not. Some call it deadsticking because they are holding the rod still even if the bait is moving because the boat is drifting. Where slabbing can be jigging the bait at different amounts of fall or holding the slab still like when slabbing for sandbass.

Deadsticking a slab and fly is deadly on calm wind days

Book a DS trip on hubbard or twok with a good DS guide and it will opens up another dimension lol. There have been so much infos on TFF over the years, every year. You can comb through them and write a volume of books lol.
