hey folks;
I got the thinking the other night and thought, it would be cool to learn how to tie jigs and make plastic ones as well. Not to sell but more for a hobby Having said that, where would I start? Without spending a ton of money up front but just to see if it's something I might joy doing and also which one is the easiest to start with plastics or hand tied? thanks

Just about everything you may want to price is here, plastic and hand ties.
To start, I'd go with hand ties. With hand ties, you can be more creative and it's more rewarding, IMHO. I've done both.
Plastics, you need to be right with the color mix up front, or you throw some plastic away. And you mix the colors before you heat the liquid, so you can't tell exactly what you have until the liquid is ready to pour or shoot, whichever, you choose.
But it's all fun.

Hand tied jigs, by far, the cheapest to "start up" with.

Crazy Angler used to offer a basic "starter kit" for about $45ish.

I bought a cheap tool kit on Amazon. There are also some cheap material assortment s there. After I tied some and got hooked I�ve upgraded my vise and bobbin. The rest of the tools are still in use. I get my materials from Fly Tyers Dungeon.

I started out as just wanting to do it as a hobby. But I warn you it is very additive. I just tie right now, started prolly 8 months ago or so. Trying to sale a couple here and there now. I find myself often looking at pouring plastics but seems like it is going to be very expensive to start up.

I prolly will one day but I got to get things going on the tying end first. I also make my own lead heads. There is not a better feeling then catching fishing on something you made.

As far as where to get materials. Crazy Angler has a lot to choose from. Their pictures aren't the best. Skip on here has a lot to offer too. I am still debating on upgrading my vise. I just bought a cheap one to start off with to see if I would like doing this hobby. Now I am wanting a little better one.

Believe it or not, a vise is a good investment. It ups your tying experience and improves your product. If your sales take off a rotary will help you keep up. And if/when you want to upgrade again, they hold their resale value fairly well...

But to the OP, hand tye first, then plastic if you decide to... imo
