Wife and I are finally to a point where we have some savings and have done a good job paying down immediate debts. The only stuff we owe on now is our vehicles and house.

I already have a rental home that should net me a chunk of change this spring because the renter wants to buy it.

Having said all of that, I finally have some money to invest and I am new to stocks, bonds, etc... My brother has been raving about cryptocurrency and I know people have made a ton of money on it. Seems kind of risky to me but I don't know much about it.

Especially interested in day trading. Any advice?

before you get into day trading you need to know the tax laws.

A few Vanguard mutual funds would be MUCH better for a new investor in the long run than anything in that post.

I'll do some research. This is why I asked. Don't know anything about the tax laws yet. Didn't even think to do some research on it.

Go here: http://www.betterinvesting.org/Public/GettingStarted/default.htm

Read the articles that explain the fundamentals of investing in stock. Watch the video clips about understanding the jargon and upsides of investing. Your public library probably has online access to Value Line, which does quarterly reports and some projections and analysis on a number of companies.

There is a lot to learn, adapt an investing strategy or philosophy that suits you. My investment club favors investing in companies that provide a 15% return.

Why do you want to sell the rental house? I mean, I understand that the TENANT wants to buy it, but why do you want or need to sell it?

If you are new to investing, cryptocurrency and day trading are the last two places you want to start.

So true so true. Make it simple, set up a periodic investment (say monthly) to buy SPX and you'll out perform pretty much every other investment out there (legal ones at least).

It's in a small town and the housing market isn't great there. The house in question was on the market for almost 2 years before we bought it. We used to live in it and moved. It only became a rental because I had an immediate offer to rent and was worried about it sitting on the market for a long time before it sold. The renter has been great and been in it for 3 years now. I would rather just get out from under it and take what I can now rather than risking a bad renter or it sitting on the market for a year before it sells.

Keep your rental unit and buy some more. Hire a professional to manage them and let the renters pay your mortgages on them for you. Rinse and repeat. After 10-15 years your houses are clear, retire and let them pay you monthly. Works for me.

I think this is a much better idea than stocks, of course I do not have any stocks, I do have a few acres though.

+1 X 100. You'd have more fun taking the money and lighting it on fire than trying day trading or getting into crypto currencies. You CANNOT beat the the market over the long haul. You may get lucky early (probably not) but over anything beyond a 2 year period you will not do as well as you would if you just bought deep discount index funds. As others have said check out Vanguard.
