I just went in December and I'll never go back. I was only there for 8 hours and really had a good time with my son. We did an excursion (off of Carnival Cruise so we were safe) and did zipline adventure. It was awesome, but the bus ride there and back was eye opening. I'd have to say that it was one of the sketchiest, poorest places that I've ever been. We went to Grand Cayman the next day and it was way better.
you know, nothing wrong with seven men who met on the internet going for a swim together

My boss and his wife/kids go every year. They love it. They travel off the resorts all the time with no problems and while people will try to sell you drugs just say no thank you if you don't want them and they go on to the next person.

Anywhere but Jamaica! Most dangerous island in the Caribbean.
Crime
Main article: Crime in Jamaica
See also: Prisons in Jamaica and LGBT rights in Jamaica
When Jamaica gained independence in 1962, the murder rate was 3.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, one of the lowest in the world. By 2009, the rate was 62 per 100,000 inhabitants, one of the highest in the world.[69] Jamaica has had one of the highest murder rates in the world for many years, according to UN estimates.[70][71] Some areas of Jamaica, particularly cities such as Kingston, experience high levels of crime and violence.[72] Some Jamaicans are hostile towards LGBT and intersex people,[73] and there have been reported cases of mob attacks against gay people.[74][75][76]
However, there were 1,682 reported murders in 2009 and 1,428 in 2010.[citation needed] Since 2011 the murder rate continued to fall following the downward trend in 2010 after a strategic program was launched.[77] In 2012, the Ministry of National Security reported a 30 percent decrease in murders.[78] Nevertheless, in 2017 murders rose by 22% over the previous year.[79]
(Wikipedia)
This is only murder. Other crime is also high.
If you go to Jamaica, stay in an all inclusive resort with lots of security.

Ive been. Buddy had to go to a local hospital to have something removed from his eye. If you go into town youll see anpoverty stricken country. If you stay on the American resorts, you should have a blast. I would go back in a heartbeat.
I do enjoy a good Squirt now and then.

Yeah, be polite while one after another after another, endlessly, literally blocking your walking path, are trying to sell drugs to you, your wife, and your children. Sounds like a great time. And what a great educational opportunity for those children.

Its been 20 years but we went to Ocho Rios Sandals all inclusive. Loved the Jamaican people we were around at the resort. It was always "no worries mon". We went to play golf and it was surrounded by a neighborhood. Had a 8' razor wire topped fence around it. On just about every hole was a guy standing off in the rough with a golf bag. It seemed weird but whatever. Finished up went back to clubhouse had a drink came outside to wait for shuttle back to our hotel. All these guys that we had seen standing in the rough come walking up and start loading up in some vans. Before they put the golf bags in the van they were pulling out these AR rifles and checking them in with the drivers. My wife and I are like WTF. Our shuttle shows up and were asking our driver whats up ? I guess they were having a problem with some locals running out and robbing the tourist golfers. The driver said the robbings had really slowed down since they shot 2 people last week ?
The resort we were at also had the razor wire fence around it. The locals would stand on the other side of it and if you walked up to it they would try to sell you all kinds of things. So like the second day there I get the nerve up to go over and check out the ganja situation. I walk up to the fence and all these little kids are trying to sell you stuff and I see who I think looks like the Ganja guy and I wave him over and tell him I am looking for some ganja. The guy says sure "mon no worries" and pulls the fence open and says come with me. I am like I don't know about this but I walk thru and suddenly I am just surrounded by all these little kids pulling me over to this little shack set up on the beach. They set me down in a chair and these 3 little girls start braiding my hair with beads and this kid brings me a coke and another kid puts like a Hawaiian shirt on me and then the ganja guy comes back hands me a five finger baggy of ganja and some rolling papers and says $35. I pay him he hands me a beer and we sat there and BS a while and then back thru the slit in the fence I went.
They have the bluest oceans I have ever seen it is so beautiful and the Jamaican people we were around were so cool and laid back.
My favorite memory was just laying out on the balcony at nite facing the ocean feeling that light cool breeze blowing in off the ocean and stars and moon sparkling off the ocean hearing the waves crashing in on the beach. Good times for sure. "IRIE IRIE no worries my friend" they would say.
People will only do to you what you allow them to do.

I also played golf there, you were required to hire a caddy. No big deal, just part of their rules. So in our group of 4, we had 4 armed caddies. Heavily armed. Seemed like good guys. I was very polite to them.

We went on a mission trip to a small inland village this last summer. Would love to go back. The people there were awesome - so friendly and didn't expect a thing. We were only bothered by people in the cities.

Lol yes we had to get caddies too. But they were not armed. The trees at that golf course I remember were gigantic not quite redwoods but 10' - 15' round for sure.

Is there anything left of the caribbean islands? Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and Aruba were spared. Just about the rest of the Caribbean and the Florida Keys were significantly effected by the hurricanes. Love Field doesn't have and never plans on having an International/Customs terminal You would think that there are Southwest flights leaving all the time from Houston Hobby to the Caribbean (there's an International/Customs terminal there), but very few flights fly direct from Houston Hobby to the Caribbean (usually have you connecting in Ft Lauderdale or Baltimore) Couldn't find a direct flight from Hobby to Grand Cayman on Southwest. Grand Cayman was at the top of our list, but it was almost double the price when we booked the trip early December.

There is never a Red Stripe, pulled chicken, or your drug of choice out of arms reach.
