I'm looking at possibly buying a 2006 ZX225 with a Yamaha 225. Going to have them pull hours and run a compression check also. What constitutes low hours, average hours or high hours? Is there a common number that on this unit that constitutes your on borrowed time? And going to be soon needing a power head? Or is it all in how it's been cared for?

80-100 a year for a fairly serious fishing boat.

From connecting a scanner to Yamahas. low time: under 100 hours, average time for a 2006 430 hours, what I would consider high time 1200 hours. To your point a 400 hour motor may on its last leg and a 1000 may be good for 500 more, depends entirely how they were taken care of. What you need to watch for is previous alarms like over heat, oil and seconds of over rpm

How the owner maintains and operates the motor is really critical. If have 2001 25hp mercury that has at least 1500hrs and it runs like new. Most issues are maintence/operater caused.

Just found out 271 hours, No stored codes for overheating or anything. Compression from 117-120.

seems like good low hour motor, but remember its still an 11 year old motor. low hours does not mean like new, which ive seen some advertisers use.

Thanks yea, I understand that. My 06 F-350 is in great shape but its not "like new " either. I just feel much more comfortable with a 271 hr motor then a 1271 hr motor.

I assume that's an HPDI, some are good, some are BAD. Good compression is a good sign. Run ring free and do your 100 hour filter maintenance. Those motors need to have been taken care of to last.

I bought a 90 Yamaha last year that was on a lifeboat on a 100 yacht. Water had cracked the lower unit and the owner just replaced it with a four stroke.

Like new was an understatement I dont think it had an hour of use on it. I cared not about the lower unit because I put a jet on it.

But seven years of zero use wasnt good for it either. Ive had to replace all the hoses, filters and gaskets plus fuel pump and ecu. I think everything needs some use or it quits.

I definitely agree with that. I am a heavy equipment mechanic. Nothing worse then trying to bring a machine out of the moth balls. Nothing but troubles out of stuff that typically would never give you issues.
