I finally got out and did a little pickerel fishing this past weekend at Daingerfield State Park. Baitfish pattern flies and gold jerkbaits fished around the lily pads were the ticket. I did a full write-up you can read here. I also put together a little video that I took. Nothing special, I just explain some of what I'm doing and why.

Nice job! Been to Dangerfield many times. Like that it seems to sit low with little wind to bother you. You can see the pine trees swaying a little but the lake is calm. This time of year the colors are nice there. I have an imitation perch dive bait that has many a pickerel teeth marks on it. Biggest was on a Ribbet Frog, in the lily pads. again good job.
May the Good Lord bless you with a bend in your rod.

I used to catch them regularly when I was a teen growing up in Tatum.
We lived a mile from the Sabine River and they were plentiful in the backwaters off of it.

This looks like a cool trip. I'd like to try it sometime myself.

Pike of this size class is perfect eating -- they haven't developed their lateral bones yet, no need to cut anything. Very white sweet meat.
