Whats a normal length for a Thanksgiving/Christmas get together?

Excellent question..i have always wondered this too.
My in-laws think it's 3 days: evening before, all day of, until about noon the day after.
It's always seemed excessive.
(P.S....the gathering is comprised of about 30 people in one house)

My wife has learned I'm only good for about 3 hours. Christmas gets an extra hour. Otherwise I'm heading for the door and may embarrass her. When we first got married they wanted us there at 10am for get togethers. Coffee and pastries, and conversation. Then to the living room for more conversation. At noon the meal was served. Then we cleared the table and had more conversation. Then we had dessert. Then more talking. Then they broke out the board games and wanted to play 2-3 rounds of whatever. At the beginning they all looked at me asking why I was in such a rush to leave at 7pm!  I've got much better scene control now. Plus... I get one day off for Christmas. I work 12+ hour days till Jan 1st. My little bit of free time is sacred

Christmas Eve is with my wife's family and we have about 25 every year. We schedule numerous activities and take breaks to eat the many different foods we all bring. We have a blast from 11am until about 10pm. Christmas Day is with my family and more subdued. Not quite the party the day before is. We gather for 2-3 hours.

My family allows beer so it is whatever. Inlaws do not so it was 7 hours today and that was an hour too long. Was not a bad time but I was ready to head back.

My family is all close by... see them several times a week. New record this Christmas.  One hour today, as I'm the only smoker in the family and don't do it around the kids. Gotta run.

3 to 4 hours for most get togethers. If it involves a fishing or hunting trip I can make exceptions.
