Slip fishing on Grapevine. As we move into winter, I am hoping the crappie will move back to our slips. They haven't been there lately. I have some really nice Pepop hair jigs as well as the usual plastics. Which one should work better in the winter? And what tends to be the best color this time of year?

I use both and both of them produce about the same. larger jigs "2 1/2 and 3 inch" works best. as for as color, any color with a chartreuse tail works best.

I've fish both plastics and hair jigs this year. So far, the plastics have out-caught hair jigs by a wide margin.

In past years, the hair jigs did better. Lots of cold weather left yet, we'll see if the trend holds.

I remember when hair/feather jigs were all the fish wanted in our slips. then plastic really came on strong and was convenient so I got lazy and stopped tying for a few years. LOL.
what I noticed for me personally, is when the weather got super cold and nasty the bigger fish I caught did come off feather and hair jigs. I really liked using a white head green body and white tail (feather jig) when the water was really cold.

I tend to use more feather jigs in the winter. I feel they will make a fish bite when it doesn't want a plastic in cold water.

I think the feather is more subtle may take a raise or two to make them mad but will draw the thump. Plastics with over active action in dead of winter is not natural.

Chartreuse hair on a blue body can be great in the winter on Palestine. I said hair not feathers.
