Time on water, establishing patterns. I am a bass fisherman. Shaw Grigsby book really helped me understand the concept of devoloping a pattern.

My couple of buddies who fish and "catch" regularly, are telling me the water is too cold to catch consistently.
Those who do catch tell me bait does not matter now, in January/February, but that I need to drop chosen baits/lures in front of the bass, and barely retrieve.
They also tell me I need to find the shallow cover, let the sun warm it up a bit during the day, then "slow-go" my retrieve.
Bottom line, so far, last two outings, I "s" at fishing.
I'm not giving up.
Addendum: I've been pond fishing in Richardson and Plano. My two main boat fishing buddies don't really go in the cold, so I'm bankin' it for now.

I know this thread is old, but I wanted to bring some motivation and hope to the guys that fish hours on end for very few bites and even fewer fish landed 8 months ago I would be lucky to catch a fish. Now, I never strike out and have caught multiple limits. It has helped that I have gone fishing with my father in law, logged a lot of hours on the water and have learned to move spots more frequently. I highly highly recommend to go fish with someone who knows what they are doing. Even if you have to pay for it. The stuff you learn plus the joy you will get from catching fish on each trip can not be matched.

Can't beat experience. Thanks dad, mom and Andy (friend when I was 13) for all those fishing trips, camping trips and beach trips. Mom had the patience to teach me knots, dad tuaght me patience and Andy introduced me to Bass fishing. 27 years later I am paying it forward to my kids.
Fishing kept me out of a lot of trobule as a kids and as an adult as well. Now it isn't about catching fish anymore....it's the peace of it that keeps me coming back.

When i wake up in the morning if it's laying over to the left I fish from the bank. If it's laying to the right I take my boat out. If it's standing straight up, well it ain't no day for fishing anyways. LMAO You'll be fishing more as you get older.

This is the topic I was searching for last week, but I was looking in the "bank fishing" forum. My mistake...as if I need more!
I ended up posting in my own topic about fishing tips.
I have had a terrible 2018 year of fishing, skunked right and left, and still fishing the same way I was last year, which was a decent year. I was/am so frustrated that I decided to "NOT" renew my license, and simply take a year off and focus on other things.
This past Labor Day weekend, a woman and I went to Fredericksburg, rented a cabin outside the town, and relaxed. I ate out, read, watched deer, nutria and lots of wild turkey on the 15 acres. It was nice. I played guitar and sang twice at the famous stages of Luckenback, Texas, and I also fished.
There was/is a creek not 20 yards from the back door. This little area was about 60 feet long and 12 feet wide at its widest. I saw big carp, largemouth of all sizes, big catfish and lots of sunfish, not to mention nutria. The first dusk was terrible. I couldn't see because my eyes are worse now, and I ended up throwing my rod/reel on the porch in frustration. I couldn't see to tie knots at dusk, and I didn't even get to fish.
I tried again the next couple of days, and with the "white" light of the sun, I could see fine. I could a couple, lost many more because I could not set the hook, but catching the sun and largemouth that I did, got my fervor back up.
It was fun.

I have had a terrible 2018 year of fishing, skunked right and left, and still fishing the same way I was last year, which was a decent year. I was/am so frustrated that I decided to "NOT" renew my license, and simply take a year off and focus on other things. This is the point where I would suggest opening up your mind to other fishing opportunities that Texas gives us. When I moved from Bass (lure) fishing to bottom fishing, my entire fishing world basically exploded over night. Just by throwing out a few handfuls of sweet corn and then placing several on a small hook, casting it out on the bottom, I was quickly introduced to the world of "rough fishing". I remember being shocked, amazed, etc, at how many fish I was now catching, and the variety of fish was incredible as I was now catching panfish, catfish, carp, and even the occasional bass! Seriously...all this from just using sweet corn at my usual places to fish. I then started researching rough fish in the dfw area and again...was amazed by the diversity of fish available to be caught. I went back to a few ponds I used to fish at, this time I put bread on the hook and bam...I was catching 10-15lb Carp on a regular basis! For a few months, I exclusively used bread and sweet corn as bait. I would sometimes make "bread bombs" which had a handful of sweet corn wrapped around the bread and I would throw these out to attract the fish. I started fishing the various spillways of the Trinity River and things kicked up a notch quickly. I started catching more fish, bigger fish. "Buffalo" was a new species caught and that rocked my world big time. One day I put the head of a sunfish on a hook, threw in the river and caught this prehistoric monster...it was called a Longnose Gar..again...my fishing world rocked. More research, more tactics learned, etc, etc. I invested in better gear, etc, etc. Milestones were made, 20lb fish, 30lb, 40lb. Now days my tactics are a bit more refined, sophisticated, etc , but I still occasionally enjoy the simplicity and tranquility of using just 1 rod and a few cans of sweet corn. If you ever want any advice, tips, etc, to get started on this potential new adventure in fishing, feel free to pm me.

One thing I noticed, you always fish at nite.? Even though it's late summer, and nite fishing is awesome at times, you should really try 5am- 3pm, and compare results. Not to mention, this pre-transition to fall period, has been tough on everyone lately, on some waters.
